Kitty MacLeod
« on: Monday 02 September 13 20:12 BST (UK) »
Kitty MacLeod was a famous Scottish folk singer, from Lewis. She was born in 1914 in India and died in 2000. Her father was in the army out in India at the time of her birth. I have been trying to find out who her parents were. Can anyone help.

Thanks

You have probably seen this lovely obit
http://www.theguardian.com/news/2000/may/17/guardianobituaries2
which gives some of the details surrounding her birth.  It does not name her parents  :( although it says father was serving with Seaforth Highlanders and was captured at the siege of Kut.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Using some of the info from the Guardian obit that Ros linked to ~

Her birth might be registered in the GRO Army Birth Indices. There is this one, which is a possible:

Catherine Macleod, Agra, Indian Subcontinent, 1914, page 217

These can be ordered via the GRO.

Her marriage to Ernest Gregson in 1998, Perth is listed on SP, so this can be ordered from that site. It should show her parents names.

Also, her sister's patronymic name is  'Màiri Oighrig nighean Choinnich 'ic Aonghais 'ic Choinnich', suggesting that her father was Coinneach/Kenneth. (http://www.tobarandualchais.co.uk/en/person/5966) Marietta MacLeod (m. Donald MacDonald) died in Morningside, Edinburgh in 1983 and, again, this is listed on SP and csn be obtained from that site, showing her parent's names.

SP = Scotlands People  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Hope this is of some help.

Nothing here that helps with parents' names - http://announce.jpress.co.uk/3973072?s_source=jpsc_stor

These may be details on her (second?) husband www.yourannouncement.co.uk/3884634?s_source=nqla_wmg

Thanks everybody for your replies. I now have enough information to go on.

My grandmother was a McLeod from Lewis and I wanted to check if she was related to Kitty, as was believed in the family. It appears they may have been 3rd cousins!
