Hi Goldie,
There is only one Cochran/e listed in the parish of Loudon and that is in Darvel Old Cemetery, but the names and dates do not match those you have given. However, here is my interpretation of the short-hand employed by the compilers, in case it might be a relative:
"John Cochrane, died 12/6/1885 age 70. Wife Jean Young died 25/9/1897, age 84. Daughter Mary died 14/1/1847, age 28. Daughter Margaret died 12/3/1913, age 73"

Hi Ian
Many thanks for that.
Not a direct relative, but most probably related somewhere.
The Cochrane/ Young marriage is interesting - my Michael Cochrane also married a Young around about the same time.
Always interesting to find any little snippets
cheers

Hi Goldie.
Did a bit of digging re. Rev Brace (you quoted that Michael was one of his elders) . The name was actually the Rev John Bruce and he was the minister of the United Presbyterian Church in the town

http://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Loudoun,_Ayr,_Scotland

Some info on the U P Church - This could mean no OPR records for Michael and family.

Looby  :)

Another little reminder that the Disruptions may have implications for our searches.

I was intrigued by the mention on Rev Dr. Brace in your post as I had never heard of him before in connection with the Parish Church. I tried finding a male Brace in Loudoun Ayrshire on the 1841 Census on the website www.freecen.org.uk but had no luck . Trying variations of the spelling brought me to John Bruce age 48 Minister of The Gospel living at Somervil Bank Loudoun with his large family. Looking for him in Ayrshire on the 1851 Census found him still in Loudoun at same address aged 58 where he is described as Minister U P Church Newmilns.

The Freecen website only has the 1841 and 1851 Census for Ayrshire but is a very useful site. Other areas are also transcribed and depending on the county you can access 1861/71/81/91. The site is an ongoing project, I believe, and is transcribed by dedicated volunteers.

Being born a Newmilns girl, I always enjoy researching and learning something new about my birthplace ;D ;D

Looby :)

That's fantastic Loobyloo!
I just had Rev Bruce's name (looks like Brace in the register - you now how it goes with spellings and handwriting!) from the Loudoun parish burial register - interestingly Michael Cochran who died 1850 - the 'Elder' at the Kirk and a weaver in Darvel is buried at Loudoun - perhaps there was no burial ground at the Presbyterian Church.
Thanks for the link about the church - now unfortunately demolished many years ago. As it was built in 1833, I wonder if Rev Bruce was the minister then - Unfortunately no 1831 Census. I have seen the freecen site - never thought of trying to find him in the 1841 or 1851Census - Doh! Mind block  :-\

I have another question you may be able to answer being a local girl.
Do you know where 'Over Langside' is /was? I have an Alexander Cochran from there and am just not sure how far away that would be from Newmilns/Darvel area?

Many thanks for your information - always exciting to find any snippet.  8)

Pleased to have been able to help Goldie.
I wonder if Michael was buried at Loudoun Kirk?

Langside?? What dates are we looking at for this Alexander Cochrane please?

There is an area of Glasgow called Langside which of course began as a village - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langside
There  is a Newmilns/Darvel connection to this village through the Brown family of Lanfine estate http://www.theglasgowstory.com/image.php?inum=TGSB00294
http://www.east-ayrshire.gov.uk/asp/gallery/view.asp?g=441&pid=872

But Alexander could also have came from Langside Farm - which was outside Galston, just a few miles away http://www.ayrshirehistory.com/galston_poetry.html  This farm has the Taylor family recorded during 1841/51
or another Langside farm which was at Fenwick again only a few miles away.

Was this Alexander married to a Helen by any chance?

Looby :)
