The BURDITT "brothers" of Middleton
« on: Tuesday 03 September 13 17:44 BST (UK) »
I've tracking one of my 'glue' families (a family whose members have repeatedly married into branches of my own families of interest)

From baptismal records and census returns for Cottingham cum Middleton between about 1815 and 1840 I have come across three families of this name (never BurdEtt in these records). At least two were farmers. We have:

Jonathon (possibly born in Bringhurst - 1814) - married Sarah ??? from Middleton
6 known sons, 2 daughters:  Henry (1839) and Frederick (1842) both baptised St Mary Magdalene, Cottingham. Living in Church Street, Cottingham 1841. Moved to Bringhurst by 1851.

Thomas (born abt 1800-1805) - married Mary ???
6 known sons, 9 daughters - all at St Mary Magdalene Church
Living in Church Street, Cottingham 1841 (2 doors from George)
one of Thomas' sons John Alfred BURDITT became a farmer in Bringhurst

George (Born abt 1810) married Sarah Rayson - St Mary Magdalene 6/8/1835
Three sons - all baptised in that church.
George died before 1851 but his widow was living in Middleton School House with two of her sons in 1851.

Any help in linking these three brothers together - with parents, aunts etc would be gratefully accepted.

Regards Alan

Alan,
I stumbled across your post re: 'Burdett brothers of Middleton'.  My search happens to be for the WEST family of Middleton.  West (William, Sr.) was a farmer of a 60-acre farm (my guess is that he was a yeoman tenant farm - managing an estate farm).  On the 1851 census the family is living at 'School House' at Middleton, Kettering.  William Sr. lists his occupation as 'Farmer of 60 acres Emp 2 men'. These two 'men' might be your Burditt brothers.  The Wests (William b.1797 and Mary b 1801) had five children - William Jr, Mary, Job, David and Jabez Thomas - they all lived and worked the farm.
Interesting - on the 1861 Census - the farm has now grown to 70-acres (Emp 5 men & boys) and the family is living at 'Grocers Shop, High Street, East Carlton, Northants'.  'Sarah West' is listed as a daughter (?).
I am researching DAVID WEST (3rd son) I believe he left the farm and went to India with the sappers & miners and ended up on the East Indian Railway.
Hope this helps - if you confirm the School House residence - let me know.

Hi Bill

At the time I was looking to see if there was a linkage between the Burditt and Burdett families.

I do actually have quite a number of Wests in our own database (69) including a Jabez West, born 1856, who was blind from birth. Although probably originating from the same family this branch lived in Cottingham rather than Middleton (with a sprinkling of Medbourne, Leicestershire)

This Jabez was the third son of William West and Ann Timson from Middleton.

Cheers Alan

HI Alan.

There is a tree on Anc* saying Jonathon married Sarah Gibbons 10th Aug 1835 at Bringhurst.

He is noted as born 1812 Bringhurst and had 9 children.

Hi Sandy

Indeed - a little further on  :) although I hadn't seen Sarah's surname and had missed one child

Kind regards
