Kennedy family from Parsonstown
« on: Wednesday 04 September 13 08:04 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Our GG Grandmother was Sophia Kennedy born around 1813, the daughter of George & Catherine Kennedy from Parsonstown, K.C.      Sophia married John William Briscoe on the 19/2/1829 at St. Paul's Dublin, she had several children, namely Ann b. 1833 Kilbeggan, George b. 1837 Kilbeggan,
John b. 1939 Kilbeggan, Samuel b. 1841 Tullamore and Henry b. 1844 Tullamore.    Sometime after Henry's birth, Sophia's Husband John William Briscoe died, no date found as yet.
John William Briscoe was Attorney for the 4 Courts at Dublin.

After his death Sophia Briscoe migrated to Australia in 1849 on board the SS Victoria and arrived in Sydney on the 4th September, 1949 where she lived until her death in 1885.

We are trying to find any records in regard to Sophia Kennedy's family, and wondering if anyone could assist me in this regard please.

Cheers
Jan

Hi Jack,
I live in Australia, so I really don't know where Birr is, imagine maybe near to where our Kennedy family came from.    However, these are more recent graves, and as I don't know who Sophia's siblings were, cannot say for certain whether there is any connection.

I guess I need to find more on George & Catherine's family first of all.    So if anyone can assist me in this regard, would really appreciate that.

However, thank you Jack for all of this information, once I know more, we may be able to connect up at a later date.

Dr. P
Just wondering whether any of the headstones at the Graveyard in Birr as listed by Jack have any connection to your family.

Hi again,
Thank you Dr. P, as we have been in contact now, have much more information on the Kennedy family.  For anyone else that can now assist us, our Sophia Kennedy married John William Briscoe in 1829 and we have been able to determine that John Briscoe, Attorney in Dublin Ireland must have died sometime between 1846 and 1849, as Sophia Briscoe then migrated to Australia in 1849.

We are trying to ascertain why Sophia Kennedy came to Australia with her family, Ann aged 16, George 12, John 10, Samuel 8 and Henry 5.   Sophia was the daughter of George & Catherine (nee Wood) Kennedy, another  high profile Legal Attorney in Tullamore, he died on the 4th February, 1842 aged 78 years.  George Kennedy was feted as the Father of the legal profession.  Unless Sophia already had family that had migrated, we could see no reason why she would leave Ireland when widowed.   Obviously she probably was quite financial, to enable her to make this journey.    Her occupation in shipping records shows that she was a House Servant aged 36, her daughter Ann a Nursemaid.

We feel maybe then that there were some other Kennedy family members already in Australia, or maybe the Briscoes.

Trying to find records has been difficult, but we do know now that Sophia had probable siblings born to George & Catherine Kennedy, Charlotte b. 1802, Frederick Bolton b. 1810, Thomas, Samuel, and a Brian born 1813, and then younger siblings Esther b. 1814 who died in Bannagher in 1841, and Elizabeth b. 1819.

If anyone can assist us with any shipping information in regard to these family members that could have migrated, would greatly appreciate that.

John William Briscoe's parent were Henry & Margaret Briscoe (nee Geoghegan) from Kilbeggan.
John was admitted to the Bar in 1813.

Sophia and her family settled on the waterfront of Sydney Harbour and she died aged 74 years in 1885.

Hello all,
I only just signed up for this to send a correction to "Jack 2227" who replied to this post with great detail. So please forgive me if I am going about this the wrong way!
Regarding Francis and Nora Kennedy, the dates of their deaths are wrong. Francis died in1946 and Nora in 1968.
These are my grandparents. May they, along with my aunts, uncles and cousins all rest in the Peace of The Lord!
Thank you most sincerely for your indulgence.
