Archie Charles Haywood - Cricket Coach at Taunton School
« on: Wednesday 04 September 13 12:01 BST (UK) »
Archie Charles Haywood was born in Eltham, Kent in 1897.

From around 1922 until 1938 he was the Cricket Coach at Taunton School.  He lived in Lewis Road, Taunton and died 7th June 1938.

Whilst I have all the Census Records I am looking for any information/photographs of Archie in regard to his time in Taunton together with the whereabouts of his grave and as to whether it may have a gravestone.

Any help will be gratefully received and appreciated.
Many thanks
Peter Haywood

I would try contacting Taunton School. They seem the most likely to have photos of his time there
May even know where he was buried.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

I agree contact Taunton School, as it's still there...

As to cemeteries,

Near Lewis road, nearest would be St James

But here's the others within that area

St James Cemetery Staplegrove Road, Taunton
St Mary's Cemetery Wellington Road, Taunton
Taunton Deane Crematorium Wellington New Road, Taunton

Taunton Crematorium, also has a cemetery for burials with it.

You could try contacting Taunton Dean Council, to see if the can turn up the name/graves, but don't expect a reply, I'm still waiting for answer to what they've did with hubbies Great Gran and Gtgt Grans head stones, as they've been removed!  alongside of many others in St Mary's cemetery...

Many thanks Jo.

I did contact the Council and they have offered to do a search for me of the burial registers, so will be doing this shortly.

Kindest regards
Peter

Hello, Peter.
I was just searching for information on my grandad, Archie Haywood and saw your post (2 years late!. Archie Haywood was best known for his cricketing which I assume is where your interest arose.
I am sat with my very elderly parents and going through the photo box to see what we can dig up.
Message me back if you are still interested.
I'd love to know what has sparked your interest in Archie.
Regards,
Jude

Have you found this site:
http://cricketarchive.com/ - try Player number 195459, I think. This will lead to Kent County Cricket Club - who knows what they can tell you?

I've had a look at the photo archives at TS and there are several photos of the First XI cricket team containing a man/men in ordinary suits.

There are no names mentioned so I don't know if any of them are Archie.

I would suggest that you contact David Bridges the Alumni secretary:-

alumni " at " tauntonschool.co.uk

He may be able to obtain copies of the relevant photos for you.  I am an old girl of the school which is why I was able to access the photo archive.

I have now found a newspaper article relating to Archie's death and his funeral.  I found it on FindMyPast, the date is 11 June 1938 and the title is given as Taunton Courier and Western Advertiser.  When you look at the actual article the paper is called Somerset County Herald.

Archie was my Great Grandfather so I do have a couple of photos of him. If you can post the school photos anywhere,  I can ask my 91 year old Mum to take a look and see if it is him (or I can try comparing to the photos I have). Only trouble is there were a lot of moustache bearing gentlemen back then!
