Can anyone help me regarding my ancestors living in Main Street, Kirby Lonsdale:

On the 1881  census
David Hamilton Birse  and family living on Main Street, Kirby Lonsdale

David was a tailor employing 4 men & 2 Boys.

Would like to know where in Main Street. Any information would be very much appreciated.

regards

The entry before the Birses in 1881 is for an Elizabeth Wilman who is a hotel keeper.

In 1871 Elizabeth Wilman is listed in Main Street and the hotel is named as the Green Dragon.

In 1891 there is still an Elizabeth Wilman at the Green Dragon listed as 31 Main Street, and the house listed after it is 33 Main Street and is occupied by a tailor.

Apparently the Green Dragon is now the Snooty Fox Inn listed as 33 Main Street. Googling produces a photo and it appears to have once been 2 properties so probably 31 and 33 Main Street at a guess.

Sorry it's Snooty Fox Tavern.

There appears to be a Kirkby Lonsdale Civic Society maybe they could help.

Gibel,

Thank you for information. I was looking at some old photographs somewhere on-line and I am sure I saw the Green Dragon. Will have to look again for it.

33 Main Street and is occupied by a tailor, may well be my ancestor's business.

keyboard86,

79 Main St (David Birse and family) may have been where they lived and the other address from Gibel could have been his tailors business.

Thank you

Gibel,

Found the old photograph I mentioned of the Green Dragon Hotel, Main Street, Kirby Lonsdale.

Love to see the old photo's, gives me some idea of what it looked like, way back then and, brings your family search alive for a moment.

My father was born in Kirby Lonsdale.

On the 1891 census my ancestor John Tallon is a Tailor in that address I think in KL
His daughter Pollie ended up working in the pub on the 01 census.

I'm sure our ancestors will have known each other.

Ady,

Thank you for the information on the 1891 census regarding your ancestor John Tallon - tailor.

I agree with you, our ancestors may very well have known each other, specially both being tailors. They may also have worked together at one time.

Just had a look at the 1891 census I have and, my ancestor and family had obviously moved and, were living at Bishop Wearmouth, Durham, England. May have been your ancestor John Tallon carried on the business.
