Looking for inmate info for Boston Union Workhouse
« on: Monday 09 September 13 21:25 BST (UK) »
Hello all, first post...I am researching my great great grandfather and found a record that may indicate he was an inmate at the Boston Workhouse. His name was John  William Timson (1843-1918) and there is a John Timson on the 1891 census listed at Boston with a similar birthdate. This is the only census that I cannot find the family intact, they are together in some shape or form on the 1871, 1881, 1901 and 1911 records. One daughter died at the age of 23 in 1890, so I thought they might have been on hard times during that period. The tricky bit is I am in the USA and am limited to internet searches for the most part. Any insight would be appreciated! Cheers!

Thanks, I tried there, but there are no actual records on the site other than the 1881 census. He shows up on the 1891 census, but I was hoping for something from the workhouse records. There are some references to a pamphlet and a book but they are not available here in the states.

THE CONFESSION OF MURDER AT BOSTON .
Nottinghamshire Guardian  November 19, 1886

The accused George Smith  had spent a night in the Boston Union Workhouse on September 6th . John Henry Speedy was the master.
In this article it names a John Timson who is an attendant in the infirmary.

Could this be your man ?

The same man is also there in 1891.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

I'm not sure which John TIMSON you are looking for as you don't mention his birthplace, if he is the one born in Rutland and married to Susan I think this could be him/them in 1891.

1891  RG12/3608  f.101  p.18    Wyke    Yorkshire    (Bradford Registration District)
13 Wyke Lane

TIMSON
John W    Head    48    Mason                 Rutland Gt Casterton?
Susan       Wife    47                                Lincolnshire Langtoft
Clara        Daur    22    Worsted Winder       "      Stamford
John W     Son    21    Engine Cleaner? Railway        "    Stamford
Arthur E    Son    15    Cotton  ??             Yorkshire Wyke
Leonard    Son    10    Scholar                      "        "

I noticed that the John TIMSON in Boston Workhouse has an S for single in the marriage column and although these can be wrong especially if dittoed the rest of the inmates seem to have their marriage details as well.

Regards,
Daisy
