Hello Rodeo,

Thank you very much.

The name in Austalia for the branch of the family seems to be fixed as DALZELL.

Regards,

Fred

Hi Fred, I think you may be related to the famous "giant baby" who is buried in the old churchyard at Cambusnethan. The stone is almost unreadable now but the transcription is ---

"Erected by John Weir and Jean Elder of this parish in memory of their son James who died 20th August 1821 aged 17 months and 9 days. This child, when only 13 months, measured 3 feet 4 inches in height, 39 inches round the body, 20 inches round the thigh and weighed 8 stones. Said at the time by the medical faculties of Edinburgh and Glasgow to be the most remarkable child of his age on record".

3 feet 4 inches = 102cm.  8 stones = about 50kg.

Sadly, the stone is almost unreadable now. Here is a picture and, the reason I think that this child could be related in some is, out of almost 600 surviving gravestones in the churchyard, only 6 have the name Elder on them. Out of that 6, there are 3 grouped in a little corner beside the ruined church. (photo in next post). Also in that same little corner is the family plot of Robert Dalziel and Ann Elder. This makes me think there could be a connection.
I will make another post with what information I have found in the burial records of Cambusnethan. Sadly, no headstone has survived for the Dalziel/Elder plot.

In this little corner are the 3 Elder graves, plus the Dalziel/Elder one. The upright stone on the left is the Giant Baby one.
