36 Bridlesmith Gate, Nottingham
« on: Monday 23 September 13 12:23 BST (UK) »
Hello,

First post and I am doing this on behalf of a customer at the library where I work.

She is looking for any information on this address, she tells me it was a tea room at one point in the 19th C.

Does anybody have any information, I have checked trade directories online and census returns for a George or Andrew Boncer who worked there in the earlier half of the 19th C but to no success.

Many thanks

36 was Edward Bonser, Tea Merchant, in the Post Office Directory of Nottinghamshire, 1876
36 was Calvert Williams, Grocer in Wright's Directory of Nottingham, 1898-99
Unfortunately earlier directories don't have street numbers.

Welcome :)

In 1861 no 36 was occupied by Irish-born publican William Henning, 47, and household: RG09 piece 2466 folio 8 page 10.

In 1881 it was occupied by William Large, 47, coachman, born Castle Donington, Leics, and his family: RG11 piece 3364 folio 6 page 5.

NB obviously census results don't necessarily tell you about who was doing business at the address - the census would have caught those who spent census night "above the shop" (if it was a shop) rather than any tradesman who was only there during the day.

In 1878 a partnership between Edward Bonser, Alfred Edward Bonser* & William Calvert of Nottingham, grocers & tea dealers, was dissolved:

*These two are likely to be the Edward Bonser (48 b East Bridgeford Notts), and son Alfred Edward Bonser (21 b Bristol Gloucs), both tea dealers, enumerated in Sheffield in 1871: RG10/4671/101/31.

Various references in old newspapers:

1881 (10 May): Thomas Large, watchmaker, of this address, gives evidence at the inquest into the death of John Smith. Nottinghamshire Guardian, Friday 13 May 1881. (The 1881 census shows that this Thomas was the 18 yr old son of the head of household, William Large).

1883 (21 Feb): a reward is offered for anyone returning a lost pug dog named "Jumbo" to this address. Nottingham Evening Post.

1891 (6 May): a clean respectable girl of about 14 or 15 years is wanted for housework at 36½ Bridlesmith Gate. Nottingham Evening Post.
