The Miners Arms in Wendron Cornwall
« on: Wednesday 25 September 13 20:30 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on The Miners Arms in Wendron, Cornwall or know where I can find some.  My GGGGrandmother was there in 1856 and I would like to know more about it.

Hiya, and welcome! Have you tried an internet search?

I asked google for "miners arms" wendron cornwall and found that it seems to be referred to as "Miners Arms Laity", for instance here:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~chrisu/cornwall/kellys/kellys_surnames8.htm

and just below that in the search results,

Laity is a tiny sort of dot on a map I guess, but not at google maps.

If you go here:

http://www.yell.com/s/needlecraft+retailers-wendron.html

you can click to see a map, and then click on Satellite ... but unfortunately it doesn't show much. It is on the A394. But streetview is available -- it shows a square two-storey stone building on a curve in the road, that may or may not be the right one, but probably is. ;) Actually, I think this is that property:

http://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/17646425

so the pinpoint given by google maps may not be the right place.

Anyway, I would bet that the present occupants would be pleased to share any information they have, assuming that address is the one where your grx3 grmother was!

I don't think that is the house - looking at the property details, it is described as being built as a mine captain's house.

The route of the road has changed over time (they took the worst of that curve out!) and according to the old OS map  the Miner's Arms was originally on the south side of the road.  Now the main road passes further south and the inn - or at least the building that was the inn - is now on the north, but cannot be seen from the road.  Unfortunately Streetview cameras did not go down the cul-de-sac that has been left following the route change.  :-\

Well that is kind of what I said ... you cannot rely on Google maps streetview to place you at the correct point on the map, and the building in question did not look like it housed the business I posted the info about first.

You did see that? ........

I have no idea whether that would be the same place, but you didn't seem to know about it, so I thought it was worth mentioning. Unfortunately, the business seems to be defunct ... but still, that's an address and post code, and I can't help but think that a letter would reach its destination and the current occupants, and one might think that occupants of 19th century inns would have some info about them. But from what you say, maybe you are close by and just knock on the door ...

You're welcome!

I know this is in reply to an old post but, if you are still interested in The Miners Arms, Laity, Wendron it was put up for sale fairly recently and photos of it can still be viewed online -
https://www.heather-lay.co.uk/property-for-sale/wendron-helston/tr13-0nw/1556820
It is also listed as "Laity Farmhouse" by estate agents Stags

According to census information the Inn Keeper 1851 & 1861 was Josiah THOMAS (1813-1866)
and his wife Jane Pascoe THOMAS nee PENLERICK (1821-1891).  Jane continued running the pub after Josiah's death, presumably until her death but certainly until 1881 census.  Sometime after 1881 it was let to the Redruth Brewery Company by Alfred THOMAS (Josiah & Jane's son) who put it up for auction in 1894.  It was sold again in 1904 to another member of the THOMAS family and became a family home not a pub.
These THOMAS's are "twigs" on my tree.

Thank you for the information on the Miners Arms.  It was interesting to see the pictures.  Since this post I have been to visit the house and I have taken a few pictures.

I have also found a piece in the West Briton about the Thomas family who emigrated to South Africa and became "Wendron Millionaires" it was published in Oct 1886.  I can send you a copy if you would like to give me your email address.

Many thanks
Sue
