Monmouthshire prison and inebriates home
« on: Thursday 26 September 13 13:05 BST (UK) »
Hi, Does anyone know what prison women usually went to in Monmouthshire? I have an ancestor who was sentanced to 3 months hard labour in 1907, she lived in Abergavenny.

Also I have found out that the woman referred to above was also sent to an inebriates home in for 18 months. This was before 1907 and I would say around the year 1904. Does anyone know where an inebriates home would have been? Also what it would have been like as I have never come across this before?

Do you think she would have been sent there or gone willingly?

Thanks, Lisa x

Hi there
Apparently the Salvation Army ran Inebriate homes in several locations. The patient  stayed for an average of a year and would then go home or get a new position.I'm assuming they must have been voluntary. But the organisation stayed in touch for the next 3 years. However there is a report in 30 Dec  1899 South Wales Argos of an Elizabeth Daley being threatened with a term in the inebriates home,so perhaps not.
Not sure if there was one in Monmouth.

Thanks ciderdrinker, I thought maybe it was the salvation army. Obviously didnt work as she was back in court in 1907 for neglect again!

Any idea about the prison and if there's any records? x

Hi Lisa
Women from Newport were sent to Usk prison in the 1800's even for hard labour.

you might find this link intresting but the records only go up to the 1880's. but it could be a starting point.
best of luck

From welshnewspapers online -
Cardiff Times 29 July 1899
INEBRIATES' HOMES - Strong Action of Tredegar Justices
According to the Clerk of the County Council (and Home Secretary) ".... there appeared no urgent necessity for the establishment of a certified inebriates' home for that County. Delegates, however, had been appointed to discuss, in conjunction with other County Councils of South Wales, the feasibilty of establishing a joint institution"
