Ellen Alway (nee REED) - St Albans
« on: Thursday 26 September 13 13:14 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon,

I am trying to find out what happened to Ellen Alway, Ellen's last child was born in 1914 St Albans and in 1917 she left the family home and was never seen or heard of again, she was married to William George Alway who never remarried.

I have looked at death records and remarriage but so far have found nothing....Ellen grew up around Redbourne, Hertfordshire, married William at St Albans and her last address in 1911 was 60 Windsor House, Cambridge Rd, Fleetville, St Albans, Herts

Is their any archive pension site where I could possibly check to see if she was entitled to a pension? or if anyone could give me info as to where to look I appreciate greatly

Many thanks

Hi

I think the biggest problem that you have here is, that if she left home and didn't want to be found, she probably changed her name. Also, if she then lived with anyone else she probably took their name and was known and buried under that name.

Thank you very much Groom,

I did think that could be a possibility which would certainly cause a problem. Thank you again

Hi

She left the children . . . . . and didn't see them again ?

Hi

Nor her sister?

To me, that is so unusual (no contact at all) she may have been ill.
If she had just turned up at a doctor/hosp/clinic/home/institution then you would have a poss situation of an unidentified person. ( I've never thought about that before - anyone ? )

I suppose that I should add that she may have been murdered ( by hubby ? ).
Was she reported missing?

Ray
My apologies for the negativity.

Hi Ray,

I had thought of something horrible happening to her as well!!!!....her husband never spoke of her again after 1917.....

I looked on ancestry and did find a marriage in St Albans 1917 of an Ellen Reed to Charles Brett, so will send for marriage cert to see if this Ellen has the same father..(she may of gone back to using her maiden name)

It might just be a case that she met someone else and had to choose between him and her family and she chose him. Unusual not to have any contact with her children, especially as the youngest was only 3, but we don't know the circumstances. Perhaps it was some kind of post natal depression.

Hi scotslink, I have just found your post from September 2013, re Ellen Alway ( Reed ). I am doing some research on behalf of my husband  who is Ellen Alway's grandson. Did you ever send for the marriage certificate of Ellen Reed and Charles Brett. Would be really interested to know if any other info has emerged since your posts of Sept 2013.
