Has anyone out there done any research on the surname Cantelo? Especially those who resided in the London area.? If so, would love to trade notes. Regards. R.B

Hi Veronica,
Derek here.  I had done a bit of research regarding immediate past, down my paternal line, but did not get past the GGG/Grandfather.  It occurred to me that someone out there might have researched the surname in a general sense, and was curious to know where that might lead?  Bingo.. you have replied.  Kind regards Derek.
PS I live in NZ.

Beginning with my G/Grandfather who was certainly William George Cantelo. Born 26.09.1858.
I believe his father ( My GG/Grandfather) to have been named Samuel Cantelo? Born 1822?
When I get to my GGG/Grandfather I believe his name to have been George Cantelo??
It all gets rather more difficult from there.
Since the majority of these people appeared to be Eastenders, I formed the empirical opinion that they most probably originated from the huge influx of Italian immigrants into London during the 18-19th century. I would certainly be interested in any other opinions. Kind regards. Derek.

According to some online trees (and discovery of his baptism) George bp.Oct.1787 St. Martin in the Fields, son of Hezekiah and Sarah - surname given as Cantalo (familysearch)

Hezekiah Cantelow of Walcot, married Sarah Sutton 15/4/1773 Bath St. James, Somerset.

They appear to have had at least 10 children - Thomas b.1774 Bath, William 2/5/1775 St. James Bristol and then 8 more in London between 1777 and 1791.

No source is given but trees state Hezekiah was b.1745, son of James Cantelo and Mary Byerley at Arreton, Hampshire.

So, with a strong concentration of the surname Cantelo in Hampshire, your line doesn't seem to have begun from an influx of Italian immigrants to London in 18th Century.   Cantelo certainly in Hampshire in 1600's.

Scopes (One-Name Study - Worldwide)
Suffolk - Grist, Knights, Bullenthorpe, Watcham
Scotland - Spence, Horne, Cowan, Moffat
London -  Monk

Hi, if your Cantelo line goes back to James Cantelo who married Mary Bryerley on the Isle of Wight, then it links into mine. I may be able to help. email. (*)
