Thank you CaroleW

It does like like they were divorced.
I will wait and see what the marriage cert states when she married Barry St.Ledger.
Many thanks

Hello
Not sure if we have the birth dates right but Ada Callow was my Grandmother married to John George Petford (Jack)
She was born 28/3/1905, parents Charles Walter Callow & Elizabeth Annie Copson.
Siblings Florence, Gladys, Walter.
Jack died 1992 age 92.
Ada & Jack had a daughter Irene Elsie May Petford (my Mother). They married 1924, Irene was born May 1925 and Ada left when she was a few months old and never seen again.
Going by the dates I would say she was pregnant with Mum when they married and this also poses a lot of questions- was Jack the father??? Jack was a professional boxer at the time.
I think she married many times:Walter Powell, Alfred Ewer & Barry St Ledger. Possible had another child around 1933.
Have no record of a divorce from Jack.
Would love to hear of anyone that knows anything about Ada as I have been looking for years.
She may have gone back to her maiden name Callow and she may not have told anyone about her first child Irene that she abandoned.
I have been researching the family tree on Ancestry.com
Regards Janice

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

I think she married many times:Walter Powell,

There are 2 births for an Ada Callow - one in 1896 and another in 1905 - both in Birmingham

The Ada Callow born 1905 is not the one who married John G Petford - that Ada married on 3.4.1926 to Walter Arthur Powell.  Here's the full marriage entry

Walter Arthur Powell 22 occ motor driver  father James occ labourer

Ada Callow 21 father Charles Walter Callow occ labourer

Witnesses Charles Walter Callow & Emily Powell

The Ada who married Petford is the one born 1896

All the following events were in Birmingham

There is a marriage in 1939 between Ada Petford and Alfred Ewer

Alfred Ewer aged 54 died in 1942

There is an Ada Petford marriage in 1943 to Barry H St Ledger.  I wonder why she re-married as Petford rather than Ewer?

Barry Hayes St Ledger was born 1881 and died in 1946 aged 65

There is this death but no guarantee it's her as any death should be as St Ledger

Ada Petford aged 61 (1896) December qtr 1957   Birmingham  9c 688

EDIT - she could be the 1921 marriage - Ada Yeomans

Hello
Many thanks for the info you have been giving me but I seem to be a bit confused now about the birth date if I have that wrong I have all the family names wrong. I have just sent for the marriage certificate for Petford & Callow and see if that has parents names on it.
I have Mums birth certificate but that doesn't shed any light on Ada's birth date or parents names except they lived at 48 Markby rd Birmingham
I have seen the marriage entry for Walter Powell & Ada on ancestry.com and thought it was the same Ada.
Would appreciate any info you may have
Regards Janice

If you have been researching the Ada Callow born 1905 - then yes - you have been following the wrong family.

The "real" Ada Callow was b 1896

Births September qtr 1896
Ada Callow  Aston    6d   398

She was baptised 3.7.1896 at St Peter and St Paul Aston.  Her parents were Alfred & Ada.  Alfred was a "polisher"

Alfred & Ada (nee Flint) married in 1895 Birmingham per freebmd

4.8.1895 at Hockley, St Saviour

Alfred Callow 21 occ brass polisher - father Charles Callow occ bricklayer
Ada Flint 21 father Robert Flint occ metal smith
Witnesses Joseph ??Fletcher and Phoebe Flint

From Gillian's opening post

I cannot find her on the 1901 Census and I have looked at every outlet which I have.

I have had the same problem and cannot find them in 1901

Ada is with her parents on the 1911 census but those details cannot be given here due to  copyright restrictions

If you don't have access - use the instructions below to get details of the family

USING THE FREE 1911 INDEX TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT HOUSEHOLD

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

Once you find a possible match - make a note of the county and district in which the person was living

Return to the index and in PERSONAL DETAILS - just put the surname of the family - nothing else

In LOCATION - Select the county and below it - type in the district

In OTHER MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD - show the full name of the person you have found on the index

Click SEARCH

The 1911 census is strictly pay per view so you will have to buy credits to view the full entry - the above instructions will only help to possibly show others of the same surname in the same household

You can check  birthplaces for free using GRU

Hello CarolW
thank you for the info. I have sent for the marriage cert of Ada & John and that will show me the age of Ada or at least name of parents.
I'm still not sure the Ada we are talking about was born in 1896. Why are you so sure it was 1896 and not the 1905.
I have researched Ada's side of the family back to about 1650 and if your right then what I have on ancestry.com is wrong.
Thank you for taking the time to help me find my Grandmother.
Cheers Janice
