Bedfordshire boy - I am not sure that the 'John Bradford' mentioned on the birth certificates is the 'John Bradford' aged 62 mentioned in the poor law records. Even though the mother Margaret Bradford and new born child Evelyn were 'discharged to husband' it has been suggested that John Bradford aged 62 was in fact the mother's 'father in law' not the father. But it has to be said that they were all receiving relief at the same time in Bedford. Complicated isn't it...!

Rosie99 - The children were born as follows :-

Evelyn May in Bedford workhouse 1914
Florence Cecelia at Summerhouse Hill, Cardington in 1915
John William in Allhallows Lane, Bedford in 1916

I now have the BC's to hand. Yes you are correct Annette7. The eldest girl Evelyn's BC gives mothers maiden name Green, informant was the workhouse manager. The middle child Florence's BC gives mothers maiden name Day, informant the mother. My father John's BC gives mothers maiden name as Green, informant the mother with note in the informant box saying 'As per declaration dated 27th September 1916' (Do not know what this means?) Hope this helps.........

I've seen an "as per declaration.." note when the mother (informant) had moved away from the district where the birth actually happened between the birth and the registration, and had gone to her local office to register the birth.

We have a former deputy registrar on Rootschat maybe he will be able to advise.

The address on both the BC and the baptism record is 216 Newmarket Road, Cambridge in the parish of St Andrew the less.

Someone I was researching yesterday in connection with the Sarah Ann Livermore who joined the travelling community in Essex was a hawker living at 208 Newmarket Road Cambridge.

Although that was in 1881 so a long time before your family, have you considered that John Bradford may have been connected to travellers - he has an occupation connected to horses so it might fit.

Going back to note  'As per declaration dated 27th September 1916' ....

On the death reg index it gives John William's dob as 24 July 1916, if correct that would mean he was registered more than the 42 days time limit the law requires so maybe the note refers to that.
