Uniform date
« on: Monday 07 October 13 19:46 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have no idea who the men in this photo are, I know this is a Royal Warwickshire uniform but I have no idea of any kind of date? Help would be appreciated as I'm struggling to find anyone in the family in this regiment!

I hate to be disputatious as I have sometimes been proven wrong but why do you think these are Royal Warwickshires? The badge on the pith helmet in no way resembles the badge of that regiment. I am not even sure these are British soldiers at all.

The mascot of the Royal Warwickshires is an antelope, preferably an Indian antelope. This looks like antelope but the badge? It would have to show the antelope.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Here's a close up of the cap (cawnpore) badge  - best I can do at the moment.
And the man on the right's collar dogs - a tab of some description. Is it a medal or something else?

Can't really make either of them out - but I agree with Hackstaple - it doesn't look like an antelope! Looks sort if Indian Army possibly?

I thought maybe the collar dogs could have been grenade shape but looking at the close up they seem more A shape with crown on top...sort of Labour Corps badge shape.

The cap badge is round with sort of laurel leaves - and inside appears to be something crossed maybe?  Either rifle, shovels (like labour corps?)  or even a number X in the centre???

Hi thanks for replying

I posted on another forum and they said Royal Warwickshires and obviously because of the antelope I assumed it was, but you're both right the cap badge looks nothing like that. I've attached 2 close ups which are a bit clearer. Do you think it looks WW1 period or is it impossible to say? There was another photo with this one of just the blackbuck antelope so possibly Indian army might be right- why else would they have photos of a native Indian antelope.

These are British soldiers in KD (Khaki Drill) warm weather uniform,. This is the earlier version prior to the stand and fall collar, so late 19th early 20th century. I will check upon the collar dog when i have got in from work. But the cap badge is deffo NOT Warks on the (rather odd) sun helmet.

Yes Medal ribbon...cant make it out pro tem but will look at it later...

And sadly not a Cawnpore...They have a flat top...This is just a bad angle pic of a Wolseley

I reckon the cap badge is the pre 1908 version of the Yorkshire Regt (Green Howards) the collar dogs fit with this.

If the gazelle/antelope/whatever could be identified, the Bn could be pinned down... :)

It could very well be a helmet plate centre worn as a cap badge....
