Montieth Row, Calton, Glasgow
« on: Friday 11 October 13 09:06 BST (UK) »
My great, great grandparents were married at 32 Montieth Row, Calton, Glasgow in 1865 by a minister of the Free Church of Scotland.
I notice other forum users mention their relatives were married at 30 Montieth Row and 33 Montieth Row around the same era. Sadly, the row of buildings is now demolished.
Does anyone know the background? Was this part of the street used for weddings where the couple did not want, or could not afford a church wedding? Perhaps if they were not parishioners they got married here?  Could any religion get married here? Can anyone help? Thanks.

Welcome to Rootschat

In Presbyterian churches such as the Free Church and the Church of Scotland it was extremely rare for a couple to be married in the church building itself until the mid 20th century. The most common places for marriages to be held were in the brides own home or in the Ministers home (manse).

Although taken a good few years later (circa 1916) this image from the Mitchel Library shows the type of buildings in Monteith Row click this link - Virtual Mitchell Library Images

Hi Pautie and Falkryn

Welcome to RC, Pautie  :)

My father and his family lived for a number of years at 30 Monteith Row, a tenement as found commonly in the area.

A little background here taking you back to the 1800s www.glasgowhistory.co.uk/Books/EastGlasgowDictionary/EastGlasgowArticles/MonteithRow.htm

Lots of images around if you google to give you a feeling of the area, opposite Glasgow Green, such as www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/record/rcahms/173995/glasgow-monteith-row-monteith-row-lane-general/rcahms?item=596861 or later into the 20th C http://urbanglasgow.co.uk/index.php?component=content&topicid=1471&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=10

So interesting -- not a direct ancestor of mine, but a g-g-g-something-uncle of mine, was married at 30 Monteith Row in 1869.  William Lorimer, who married Jane Smith.  It appears to have been her parents' house.  Any connections?

Hi, My husbands GGrandparents where married at 17 Monteith Row 1911. I looked up the voters role for the year and found Thomas Hislop a Clergyman living at the address. Thomas is the minister who married them.

I just received an 1860 Marriage Record from District of Calton, Burgh of Glasgow, with 2 Marriages on the page.
Marriage 1 was at 22 Monteith Row, according to the forms of the Free Church.
Marriage 2 was at 13 Monteith Row, according to the forms of the Independent Church.
So the area certainly seems to have been a hotbed for nuptials
regards
John
