help with VEASEY and the place Charlestown Ireland
« on: Monday 12 July 04 10:21 BST (UK) »
Hi, Does anybody out there have or know the name Veasey (Vasey) from Charlestown Ireland.
What I have so far is :-
They were born around the 1850s in Ireland and moved to Wigan around 1878.  John Veasey married Winifred Foy also from Charlestown in 1878 in Wigan.  John had a brother Thomas who died in a Wigan mine in 1879.  Their father was Patrick who must have stayed in Ireland.   Another problem - where is Charlestown?  this site says Louth but I have also found it in Co Mayo.
I have no idea about Ireland.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Neither Veasey nor Veasy seem to show up in the Griffiths Registration or in any other database I search. Maybe the spelling changed over the years but I can't think from what.

Have you seen this VEASEY website? They don't mention Ireland.

http://members.tripod.com/~Ann_VZ_Davis/
but some of the messages do
http://members.tripod.com/~Ann_VZ_Davis/oldguest.html

and there's a message list
http://genforum.genealogy.com/veasey/

which has some Ireland mentions.

Hei Lizzy,

James Vesey, aged 22, emigrated to America on the Ocean Queen sailing from Liverpool in 1848. He arrived there on 26th August
Peter Veasey, a labourer aged 21, emigrated to New York on the Teutonic

Best Wishes, Chris

Hi Lizzie,
this site: http://genforum.genealogy.com/vesey/messages/79.html has Vesey (and variants) references from Charlestown Mayo - there may be a contact, although it is quite old.
It does mention that the Charlestown records are quite clear so that is optimistic and perhaps can be followed up.
www.failteromhat.com has several Vesey in Griffiths Valuation (around 1850) for Kilbeagh parish which includes Charlestown.
Some  still there in 1901 census at http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/
This site http://www.from-ireland.net/parishrecords/mayo/mayorcindex.htm#6 has the LDS reference for Kilbeagh parish where you could order the film to search.
This is presuming that your ancestors were from Charlestown area! The Griffiths site does not have any variants of Vesey in Louth.
every good wish

http://www.mayo-ireland.ie/Mayo/Towns/Charl/Charl.htm - a Charlestown site with info etc- there is a discussion board where you might want to post an enquiry.

I have only just come back onto the site after being too distracted with other branches of my trees.  I would like to thank you all for the sites posted.  It has given me something to look into and I have a couple of email addresses from one of the sites to contact to see if they can help.

Thank you for he message.  I have Patrick (a labourer) who must have been born around 1830.  Then there are two sons Thomas and our John b.1850.  John was definately in England in 1878 to get married here.  His wife being Winnifred Foy father Matthew who was deceased at marriage.  The 1901 census is the one that says for both John and Winnifred birth Meath Charlestown.  John and Winnifred lived in Wigan but one child was born in Yorkshire (from a census)  and I have noticed a lot of Va/easeys in Yorkshire.  Lizzy
