Elm Villa, Swindon, Wiltshire
« on: Wednesday 16 October 13 10:52 BST (UK) »
Elm Villa stood by itself on the banks of the Wilts. & Berks. Canal in Swindon near College Street. I have not been able to find it in either the 1901 or 1911 Censuses. Does anyone know anything about it? Thanks. Toby.

Hi  - I've done a bit of digging & found the address was Elm Villa,47 Wellington St.

1901   Charles H. Barker b 186 Wokingham Berks

          Maud Barker  b 1862  b Purton Wilts

          Charles V.G.   s  b 1885  Swindon

           Lilian M.    d  b 1886      Swindon

           George  s   b 1888         Swindon

 Can't post the 1911 I'm afraid - not allowed.

                                                                                       Regards

                                                                                              Everlea.

Hi Everlea,
Thanks for your speedy response. I am amazed that you found it so quickly.i am however a little cautious for although Wellington street is in that area, it is not a street I would have guessed. Standing remotely it could have been recorded in one of several streets the most likely being College St.but not convincingly.
In the 1901 census it is recorded as being between 47 & 48 Wellington st. and in 1911 there is nothing between those 2 houses. Maybe in 1901 the enumerator didn't know where to put it!
If it could be found in 1911 we would have some clues from number of rooms. The photograph shows it to be quite large. For now however your Elm Villa remains the favourite. Thanks, Toby.

You're welcome - I was lucky because as I Googled it I saw a ref from the Nat. Archives which gave

the address as Wellington Street which is what was shown on census.

I'll let you know if I come across anything else.

Just seen a ref to it being a former inn, hence size.
