Mary Jane Sheppherd/Shepherd/Sheppard b1886
« on: Wednesday 16 October 13 11:46 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anybody help me find out what happened to Mary?

She is was the oldest sister of my Great Grandfather, and the only one of his siblings I do not know what happened to them.

1891 census she is listed living in Quenington Green
Father James
Mother Mary
Mary J  age 5 Daughter -b Coln St Aldwyns
 + other known siblings

1901 census she is listed living in Hatherop entry number 16
Father James
Mother Mary
Mary J  age 14 Daughter -b Coln St Aldwyns
+ other known siblings

She is not on the 1911 census for the family, and would be about 24 years old
Thanks in advance

Colin

Colin,
For your records:- From St. Mary's Church, Risca, Monmouthshire, Baptisms.
1st June 1910, Percy John, son of William and Mary Jane Lewis of 5, Woodbine Terrace, Crosskeys,
Fathers occupation, Miner.
Born 18th August 1912. Bapt. 6th November 1912, Constance Mary dau. of William and Mary Jane Lewis, Crosskeys. Miner.
According to freebmd.org.uk they had two more children; Harold WJ, Mar. Qtr. 1915 and Vivian, Mar. Qtr. 1917.

I hope this helps,

Gerry

Gerry

Thankyou for the info..

I am still trying to confirm if this Mary is the Mary Jane Sheppherd born c 1886 Coln St Aldwyns in Gloucestershire.  Is there any records of the marriage ?

There is a Mary Jane Lewis on the 1911 census matching your Mary's place of birth also year she is married to William Lewis aged 25 also son born 1910 . They are living 85,High Street Crosskeys nr Newport .. This couple were married 1909 Newport Monmouthshire

If William is a miner, then I can't see that he ever came to Gloucs, is possible that Mary Jane moved to Wales to work between 1901 and 1911 but no family knowledge to support this so far..

Thank you

Colin

I can't find their marriage in St. Mary's, Risca, so the only thing I can suggest is to buy a copy of the Marriage Certificate. March Qtr. 1909, Newport, Mon. 11a 261

20 March 1909, at the parish church in Llantarnam...
William Lewis (bachelor, aged 25, coal miner, 85 Tredegar St, Cross Keys, father John Lewis, dead) married Mary Jane Sheppard (spinster, 22, Abbey Terrace, father James Sheppard, labourer).

Witnesses: William John Pike and George {something like Boundy?)}

All signed.

Thank you so much...

This is almost certainly my Mary Jane..
Father was James Sheppard and William John Pike was an older half brother (Mothers Maiden name Pike)

I did not know what happened to William either, but now I know he was in Wales in 1920

Thank you
