Master Mariner's death
« on: Sunday 20 October 13 12:48 BST (UK) »
My GGGGGrandfather was Edward Simmons a Master Mariner/Ship owner living at Dockwray Square, Tynemouth. He owned  a Brig, Collier name "Providence and Mary",  He died 24 November 1782, but I cannot find his Obituary or how he actually died.  Any information which helps would be most appreciated

Welcome to Rootschat ;D

Getting hold of his Death Cert may shed some light on his cause of death, if you know where he died. While he lived at Tynemouth he may not have died there. As a Mariner and in particular a coal carrier he may have succumbed, as many did, by bad weather and overloading. The 'Plimsoll line' on ships is a result of so many losses of coal ships in that time period.

If it was caused as a result of sinking then a maritime enquiry would have been held. Check 'Lloyd's Register' as this may have a reference. The Times also published results of all enquiries. Unfortunately if it was just of natural causes then probably no real mention as obits were not generally published.

"Providence & Mary" is NOT on the Lloyd's register. ??? This doesn't mean it didn't exist just that it wasn't insured by Lloyd's.

Did he have a collier ship ,named the Edward Simmons, sailed from Newcastle ,April 1772

There is a book in North Shields library containg names of owners of ships,
the ladies there will help you if you contact them yourself, if they are not to busy, make sure you are put through to the family history department,

Providence and Mary,collier,sailed out of Newcastle,Jan 2nd 1783,

It is again mentioned the Provident and Mary owned by Edward Simmons arrived in London from Newcastle September 1783.

don't give it hope of finding some relevant information,

But as he died at home I doubt you will find his cause of death,
