Thomas McAllister/ Ann Donegan Lisburn
« on: Monday 21 October 13 20:20 BST (UK) »
I have just discovered Thomas McAlister & Ann Donegan were my 3xgreat grandparents.

Ann's surname was spelt in Church records as Donegan, Donnegan and Donaghy.

Thomas was a weaver and lived at Smithfield in Lisburn. He may have been the Thomas listed in the 1819 Lisburn directory who was living at Johnston's Entry.

They had the following children:
Ann (1823) married George Morgan, moved to Belfast, died 1886, buried City Cemetery.
William (1826)
Joseph (1829) married Catherine Murphy in Belfast in 1849, no further knowledge.
Harriett (1834) married John Walker, moved to Belfast, had three children in 1858, 1861 & 1863.
Mary (1835)

Today I found baptisms for four of the five children, but not Harriett (my 2xgreat grandmother) in records of Lisburn Cathedral.

I found a Thomas Abbot & Mary McAlister lived at Smithfield in 1834 when they had a daughter Elizabeth. Also an Alexander & Jane McAlister lived at Smithfield in 1827 when they had a daughter Catherine. So far I can't connect them to my McAlisters and I have no knowledge of other Donegan/Donaghys in the area.

Can anyone add to the above at all? Does anyone else have a family that may connect to my one?

Hi

A long shot... I am just starting to search for family members, my grandmother was I think May/Minnie Walker who lived in Belfast, Fort River Gardens. Her parents seemed to be George and MaryAnne Walker, listed in Belfast 1901 census. In the 1911 census George lives with  May and a neice Magdelene Donigan?

No Magdelene  as anyone's Niece in any county in 1911

Hi Rosniak
You have ever good reason to connect Thomas McAlister a weaver to the Thomas listed in the 1819 Lisburn directory who was living at Johnston's Entry.]  BUT how do you know he was in Smithfield?
I rechecked and found spelling variations and another of later interest perhaps
1819 Lisburn section DIRECTORY OF LISBURN for 1819
McCallister, Eliza, haberdasher, Castle Street
McCallister, John, nailer, Antrim Lane
McCallister, Catharine, Antrim Lane
McCallister, Alexander, coal porter, Antrim Lane
McCallister, Thomas, weaver, Johnson's Entry
McCallister, Neesy, nailer, Smithfield
McCallister, Charles, servant, Bridge End
McCallister, James, knit shoe maker, Bridge Street
Morgan, Hugh, weaver, Bridge End whose family continued in lisburn
in the same directory
Trades and Professions in Lisburn
Haberdashers
McCalister, Eliza, Castle Street

A Source I use regularly but with caution
1823-1837 Tithes Applotment Books based upon the index work of the Irish Genealogy Hub’s listing for each parish in Northern Ireland, which are quicker to lookup if you know the parish! The relevant original books are in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Belfast. The entry is a simple one liner The result was unexpected because
the tithes for Blaris are minimal, so that looks like Lisburn was protected by the Church of Ireland who was collecting the Tithes
McAllister, Charles-Townland: Largymore Year: 1834-Blaris-Antrim
McAllister, Charles-Townland: Largymore Year: 1834-Blaris-Down & Antrim----

Hi maggieryan
So if you think census correct , you now have ancestors to be proven ie George Walker b~ 1866-7 Church of Ireland Co Donegal, a possible Magdalen Donigan {b~1868-9} Roman Catholic Co Londonderry .  their child  Minnie/Mary Walker b 1898-9 Church of Ireland being your identified ancestor Have you started  a George Walker b ~1866 of Co Donegal topic  on the Rootschat Donegal pages.   There are 263 entries for Walker in Griffiths Valuation, one of whom might be a parent to George. if he was named after his father that reduces to four possibly five .
WALKER   GEORGE   DONEGAL   CLONLEIGH
WALKER   GEORGE   DONEGAL   GLENCOLUMBKILLE   [2]
WALKER   GEORGE   DONEGAL   KILLAGHTEE
WALKER   GEORGE   DONEGAL   TEMPLECARN
Good Luck onwards
