LOST FITCH, POPLAR
« on: Sunday 27 October 13 13:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am tracing the FITCH side of my family who lived in Poplar.

On the 1851 census for 22 Wells Street there is a John Fitch 1784 Poplar and his wife Mary Fitch 1782 Poplar.  They are both lodgers of Ann Kelly who is the head.

I have tried to find other records for John and Mary without success - nothing is coming up at all and it is like they didn't exist apart from the 1851 census!

Can anyone help?

Thanks Carole

The trouble is that both could have been dead by the 1861.

Any joy with death references?

And if they were lodgers in the 1851, how secure is the Poplar birthplace for them?  I see that only Annie Kelly has a different pob.

Can't see John Fitch for certain in the same area in the 1841, but there is a Mary Fitch aged 55 with (apparently) children Charles (15), Henery (14), and Joseph (10) in St John Hackney, which isn't too far from Poplar.

Any good?

Hi IgorStrav

I found the 1841 census and also a baptism records for Joseph and a Charles but the father was Robert so not my Mary.

No luck either with death records.  Thought we found her, Mary Fitch 1857 Poplar, but in the end she was too young from the burial record!

Hi Rosie

Thanks for the marriage record.
It is so difficult to say if it is the right one.

The family were Poplar based but they did start to move to Bethnal Green and Hackney in the 1810s or so. St Pancras hasn't really popped up when researching my line but never say never as the areas are all close to each other!
