SPITTAL OR SCOTLAND?
« Reply #10 on: Thursday 19 December 13 02:13 GMT (UK) »
:o  I appear in Northumberland forum, questionning where my great grandfather JOHN MILLIGAN was born, where and when he died.  He appeared on the English 1881 census with his wife Mary (maiden name Marcy Walker) and four children all being born in Tweedsmouth, Northumberland.  John Milligan writes he is from Spittal on the marriage certificate to Mary in 1872.

BUT THEN CAME THE MYSTERY - he dissappeared from view and Mary seemed to reappear in Scotland married to a George Barton (although there is no marriage certificate).  She had a few children with George, naming one George  - although she already had one with my great grandfather named George; so now she had two.  Can anybody help me solve this MYSTERY.  WHAT HAPPENED TO MY GREAT GRAND PA?

Post on Beginners Board now merged with this one to prevent duplication , other posts edited.

Hi

I see that they had a son, George Barton aged 2 on the 1891 census. His birth cert states that George and Mary married 25 June 1886, Berwick on Tweed. As you say, no marriage found there though.

Mary died 13 March 1939, in the Eastern General Hospital, Leith. Aged 84. She is recorded as widow of
1. John Milligan, Plasterer
2. George Barton, Tailor

This looks like John in 1851:

Kiln Hill, Tweedmouth
HO107/2421/186/32
John Muligan, 40, labourer, b. Ireland
Jane, w, 30, b. Tweedmouth
John, s, 2, b. do

Hi Again

Just found the marriage cert of George Barton and Mary Walker or Milligan

Blytheswood, Glasgow, 16 April 1927, by Declaration.  George aged 62 and Mary (widow) aged 72. Address 45 Dorset Street, Glasgow

So, maybe they discovered that  John was dead by then.

That definitely looks like him, Alan. Good find  :)

When I first came up to the NE in the 1960s, I stayed in Framwellgate  :)

I would say that’s him, a former Plasterer from Spittal.

A few other possible sightings :

Birth Dec qtr 1848, Berwick, John Mulligen.

1871 census. Lessudden, St. Boswells, Roxburgh, Scotland.
John Milligan, 21, Plasterer, b. England.
About 35 miles west of Berwick.

Death March qtr 1913, Sunderland, John Milligan, age 68.
Age a bit out, but matches 1911 census.

Alan.

Durham - Rogerson, Child
Cumberland - Irving, Hill
North Yorkshire - Layfield,
Ireland - Collins
