Emigrating from Ayr in Scotland to Australia
« on: Sunday 03 November 13 02:40 GMT (UK) »
We are looking for information regarding Thomas William Welsh, who came to Australia, but not at the same time as other members of his family. His wife, Isabella Allan Welsh, came to Australia in 1927 with her 14 year old son, John Moore. She gave an address in Ayr, Scotland, her age as 57 and recorded her occupation as 'Grocer.' Robert Allan Welsh (roughly 24 years of age at the time) came to Australia in 1929 from Ayr. There were many, much older children, probably settled in Ayr. At least two other children came to Australia, May Montgomery Welsh, who married Albert Melrose Treloar in Narandara, NSW, in 1936. Another child, Elizabeth Montgomery Welsh, also came to Australia. We can find no record of Thomas William/May or Elizabeth Welsh arriving in Australia. It is possible Thomas was in Military service, as the second oldest child, William Bruce Welsh, was born in Peshawar in India in 1895. William Bruce came to Australia in 1913, served in the 1914-18 war, and died here in 1959. Could anyone help us find Thomas William Welsh. The family can be found in 1901, living in Midlothian. Before marriage Isabella (nee Rollo/Rolley b. Dreghorn 1870) worked as a domestic servant in the home of Henry James Montgomery at Chestnus Square, Wellesbourne, Warwickshire. She can be found on the 1891 census. Isabella Allan Rolley Welsh died in Lalor in 1954 as is buried in Geelong East cemetery.

In a search on TROVE this came up...

Albury Banner and Wodonga Express (NSW : 1896 - 1938) Friday 25 December 1936 p 5 Article

At the Methodist Church, Narandera, the marriage was celebrated, of May Montgomery Welsh, youngest daughter of Mrs. Isabella Welsh, of East Geelong (Vic), and of the late Mr. Thomas William Welsh of Ayr (Scotland), and Alby Melrose Treloar, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Treloar,   of Narandera. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. J. Harper. The bride's frock was of dusty pink georgette. Miss Joan Treloar, sister of the bridegroom, attended the bride. She wore a rose-pink georgette frock. Mr. Keith Treloar was best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bridegroom's sister, Mrs. W. Kenny, of Cuddell, where Mrs. J. Treloar, as hostess, received - the guests.

From this it appears that Thomas William Welsh may have died in Scotland, prior to Isabella coming to Australia.

Will continue the search, Regards PCB

Good point PCB  :)

And this is probably William Bruce Welsh's marriage announcement in 1925 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article2147460

WELSH-D'ARCY. - On the 24th June, at All Saints' Church, East St. Kilda, by Rev. Jones,
William Bruce, eldest son of Mrs T. Welsh of Ayr, Scotland, to Adelaide Frances, eldest
daughter of late Tom D'Arcy and Mrs D'Arcy, Commercial road, South Yarra. (Interstate
papers please copy.)

This implies that Thomas William Welsh had died before June 1925

Thanks for those two responses, guys, but we tend to think that Thomas is buried in the East Geelong Cemetery, albeit in the C of E section, rather than Presbyterian like Isabella. His year of death (we think) is 1935, but we are yet to visit the grave to confirm these details. Thanks for nla snippet for William Bruce Welsh, we did not have that information. Hope to learn more soon....and thanks again

I see there are 2 Thomas Welsh who died in 1935 buried at Geelong cemeteries http://mapping.gct.net.au/Mapping/Default.aspx

The one who died in January is in the Highton (Barrabool Hills) Cemetery.  This is an obit to this man who came from Scotland in about 1900 and managed the Albion Woollen Mills. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article11010514.  His death notice  http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article11010456 says he was husband of
Jean Allan Walsh.

Then there is this article in April about a Thomas Welsh who is over 71 years of age and lives in Aberdeen St Geelong and has beautiful handwriting http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12239154

The Thomas Welsh who died in July 1935 is buried in Geelong Eastern Cemetery.  His funeral notice says he lived in Aberdeen St Geelong http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article11747385 so he appears to be the man with the beautiful handwriting.

Seems like a visit to the East Geelong cemetery is in order. Many thanks for your help.

Not sure he fits the profile of our Thomas William Welsh then. Our Thomas was listed as an electrician on the 1901 census in Midlothian. He sure is elusive! Hardly think he'd been the manager of a woollen mill either. But thanks anyway, we'll keep looking.

Hi All,

My great grandfather was Thomas William welsh and his wife was Isabella Rollo.  The details on his death certificate are:

Died in Burgh of Ayr in the County of Ayr on 10 May 1913.
The informant was Isabella Welsh, his widow.

I don't think Thomas ever came to Australia although his wife and some of his children did so.
