Collier "Minerva" drove onto rocks
« on: Tuesday 05 November 13 13:34 GMT (UK) »
Edward Simmons was master of the "Minerva" sailing from Shields to London with a cargo of coal when she was driven back into port and ran aground (Newcastle Courant April 1782). Edward was owner of Brig Collier "Providence and Mary" but was master several times on the Minerva. Lloyds shows that various masters were shown sailing the Providence and Mary into London, I assume that the Masters must have moved to different ships within the port of Shields (Tyne)
I am trying to find information about the "Minerva", where she was built, size, and owners.  If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Hi,

It seems there were several boats at that time called Minerva: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Minerva

Hopefully you can narrow it down to the correct boat from that list and then learn more about it.

Lloyds Lists are available online but whether she was included in the Register depended very much upon the size of the vessel. The other problem, as mentioned by Jack, is that Minerva appears a relatively common name.

This book is the Lloyds register for 1781/82
