Donald Fraser Restigouche New Brunswick
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 09:27 GMT (UK) »
Could some kind soul check the following, as we only have the single volume 1st edition.

"Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation, Volume 2" by Donald A. Whyte. There are entries for Donald Fraser, Helen Fraser and Christiana Stewart who arrived in New Brunswick in 1833. Donald and Helen are on page 94 and Christiana on 352

This relates to a lot of snippets that are probably linked:

Donald Fraser, son to Donald Fraser and Ann Stewart, Blair Atholl, born 8th November 1797.

Restigouche newspaper "The Gleaner" extract: At Mountain road, Dalhousie, 8th May 1861, Donald Fraser, farmer age 63, native of Blair Athol, Perthshire, resident of this county for 28 yrs.

Donald Fraser, lately in Edinburgh married to Christian Stewart in Tirinie (Blair Atholl) marriage 8th July 1827.

Helen, daughter to Donald Fraser and Christian Stewart, 15th June 1828, Edinburgh, Midlothian

1851 census Donald Fraser and Christ. Stewart,  Restigouche

Many thanks,

Throth (www.borenich.co.uk)

Here are the entries for Donald, Christiana and Helen:

Donald Fraser, born ca 1798, died 1861. From Blair Atholl, Perth to New Brunswick; settling in Mountain Brook, Restigouche Co. He was married to Christiana Stewart. Buried in New Mills. Daughter named Helen.

Christiana Stewart - From Blair Atholl, Perth. Sister of Peter Stewart, merchant. To Restigouche Co, NB in 1833 - residence in Mountain Brook. She was married to Donald Fraser.

Helen Fraser, b ca 1828. From Blair Atholl, Perth. She was daughter of Donald Fraser and Christiana Stewart. To NB in 1833 settling in Mountain Brook, Restigouche Co. Buried in Dalhousie. Married John McLoughlin with children Isabella, 1859-82; Donald, b 1861; John Stewart, b 1864; Christy Helen, b 1870.

There are two Peter Stewarts who went from Blair Athol to Restigouche. The first would appear to be Christiana's brother since he is listed as a merchant but I included the second since he settled in the same area of Restigouche as Donald et al.

Peter Stewart, born ca 1795, died 1854. From Blair Athol, Perth to Dalhousie, Restigouche Co, NB, in 1817. He was a merchant. Married to Mary Hamilton. Both buried in Dalhousie.

Peter Stewart, born ca 1809, died in 1879. From Blair Atholl, Perth to NB before 1842 settling in Mountain Brook, Restigouche Co. Farmer. Married to Jane Galbraith. Both buried Dalhousie. Children were: Margaret, b 1860; Christian, b ca 1862; John, b ca 1865.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for taking the trouble of looking up the reference.  I think that we are fairly certain that this is the same family.

John Stewart and Christian McLauchlane in Tirinie had several children: Patrick born 11th June 1793 and his sister Christian was born 1801, so this seems to fit.

I wonder if Peter set himself up as a merchant and then encouraged others to emigrate to Restigouche afterwards.

Once again many thanks.

Apologies that it has taken so long to produce the material on Donald Fraser, but we hope that you like the results.

It does not exactly match previous posts, but we think that the two Peter Stewarts have been mistaken for each other by a  number of authors.  As far as we can tell there is no connection between Peter Stewart (the merchant) and Blair Atholl, but you never know.  Other people from Blair Atholl did move to the Glasgow area in Scotland.

Anyway, here is the link and if there are errors or omissions please say so.  We would also like to hear from descendants.
