Curran/Flanagan
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 11:23 GMT (UK) »
Curran family were living in townland of Shananure near Belleek Fermanagh , Patrick Curran's daughter Susan married, a Francis Flanagan have not yet found when?.
1901 census shows them living on the property in Shananure which was originally the Curran's holding.
1901
Surname       Forename       Age       Sex       Relation to head       Religion
Flanagan       Francis       32       Male       Head of Family       Roman Catholic
Flanagan       Susan       46       Female       Wife       Roman Catholic
Magee       Margret       30       Female       Servant       Roman Catholic

Then 1911really not sure about this if it them or not?
Surname       Forename       Age       Sex       Relation to head       Religion
Flanagan       Francis       46       Male       Head of Family       Catholic Church
Flanagan       Susan       70       Female       Wife       Catholic Church
Mc Gee       Maggie       37       Female       Servant       Catholic Church
Brennan       Thomas       26       Male       Servant       Catholic Church
Dolan       Denis       22       Male       Boarder       Catholic Church

Although Francis age does not really match I'm presuming it is a typo even Susan's is out?
Looking for any info on this elusive family.

Thanks,

Fran

The Old Age Pensions Act 1908 introduced a non-contributory pension for 'eligible' people aged 70 and over.

It came into law in January 1909 across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

As a result, recorded ages tend to vary wildly between the 1901 and 1911 Ireland Census records.

I may be wrong Fran, but on first glance, I suspect it's not a typo (ie. your stated 1901 and 1911 records are indeed the same couple).

Age inflation on the 1911 Ireland Census was far from unusual for that reason.

But more than happy to hear folk post alternative theories! :)

The townlands of Sruhanure (1901 census) and Ardees Lower (1911 census) lie very close to each other within the Civil Parish of Inishmacsaint, which lies to the west of County Fermanagh, indeed part of it on the County Donegal border. On a modern map, both townlands lie just below the western end of Lower Lough Erne (A46 Ardees Road / Lough Shore Road), about 5 miles east of the County Fermanagh / County Donegal border.

About 4 miles into County Donegal is Ballyshannon, and there is a marriage of a Francis Flanigan to Susan Curran registered there that would tie in to the marriage timeframe mentioned in the 1911 census record.

Here it is, it might be worth ordering up:

An index search in the "RootsIreland" website also brings back a hit for a civil marriage of Francis Flanigan to Susan Curran in County Donegal in 1890, you could also try that if you wish (it's pay to view the transcribed record) - BTW, from the index search, I can confirm that Susan's father in this record is cited as Patrick.
