George Lamont Horn 1903-1976.
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 14:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I have been researching my great-grandfather, George Lamont Horn for nearly 2 years now. I knew his birth date and his death date, but could not go any further back.
I spent ages going round and round in circles on the internet, with no luck.
I then turned to rootschat, and nobody could come up with much, so I was advised to get George's birth certificate. I spent a year after that researching, but found absolutely nothing, which I thought was a bit bizarre.

So I decided that I HAD to get the certificate. And it arrived this morning, after travelling 10,000 from the UK.
I now have the two names of George's parents. However, when I put their names into Ancestry, I still have absolutely nothing. No census records, no birth dates, death dates, wills, baptism records, or any links to other family trees.

So after another frustrating day, I have decided to return to Rootschat, and give you the extra information I have found out, to see if anyone can help me :). I am completely stuck!

George Lamont Horn
Born: 3rd November 1903, at home; 7 Upper Grove, South Norwood, Croydon, England.

Father's Name: William Nixon Horn
Father's Occupation: Chemist

Mother's Name: Violet Hemp Horn, formerly Thomson.

Mother registers birth on the 9th December 1903.

Can anyone help with more information on William and Violet?
Thank you!
Chris

I wonder if this could be William's birth?

Hello groom

Thanks for your quick reply!
I did find that too. Nissen sounds a lot like Nixon.
And considering it's the only one that came up, and would fit the time, it is possible!

The only problem with that is that he is in the 1911 married to someone else.  ::)

However, I cant find a marriage for William and Violet, so I wonder if they didn't marry and the relationship broke up after George's birth?

I have also found a possible death.

William N Horn
Portsmouth Mar 1962.
Aged 81. (which would also fit the birth of 1881)

At this time, his son, George, was living in Worthing, Sussex.

Although I have found on Ancestry, a William Nissen Horn in the 1911 census, aged 30, with a completely different family. No Violet, no George?

I think that is the one I found as well. We need to find George and Violet in 1911.

I'm still wondering whether William and Violet were ever married. The middle name of Nixon and Nissen are so similar, it could well be the same man.

Yes, to find them in 1911, with George, who would be 8 years old.

Regards to marriage, it says on the certificate, "Violet Hemp Horn, formerly Thomson". She could have lied I suppose!

Although I don't like speaking about family "stories", I have been told that there was a "long line" of soldiers. Hence why I was very shocked when his occupation said "Chemist" on the birth certificate haha  ;D
I have also tried looking up military, but with no luck.

Any extra help would be fantastic, but I must go to bed as it is 1am Adelaide time!!!
Will log on straight away in the morning! :)
