Hi,

Was Nellie her given name or a nickname?

The New Forest is in Hampshire so could her death have been registered there and not Dorset?

Thanks Nanny Jan, Nellie was her given name, like her sister Florrie and brother Joe I rather think it was fashionable to name children this way in late Victorian Yorkshire. I only met my great aunt once and that was when I was a child in the 1950s. stoop.

So was Nellie b Yorkshire??

Was her sister Florrie or Florence?

Was her brother Joe or Joseph?

When were any of them born??

Did any of them marry?

Did any have middle names?

Do you know the d.o.b. of any siblings??

If we can find her d.o.b. then it will be easier to find her death reg

Hi Suzard, I am sorry the following is so sketchy but I have not been able to find out more. The parents of Nelly, Florrie, Ada, and Joseph were Arthur and Sarah Ann Bland.  Nelly was born in 1890, Florrie in 1889, Ada my grandmother in 1892 and Joseph in 1902 all born in Keighley. When Joseph married in 1925 to Lily Baden Shuttleworth on the marriage certificate he is named as Joseph David Neil Smith. In the census of 1901 and 1911 both Nellie and Florrie appear as Nelly and Florry. I have not been able to find out who Florrie married and only know that Nellie was a spinster when I saw her in the late 1950s. I have not got the slightest clue as to how she ended up living near the New Forest.I can remember that Nellie died sometime in the 1960s and Joe my great uncle in the mid 1970s. Lily died in May 1988 her daughter in law was Susan Bowen Smith who lived in Shipley. I will appreciate any help you can give as I have reached one of those brickwalls. Regards stoop.

In the census of 1901 and 1911 both Nellie and Florrie appear as Nelly and Florry.

In 1901 "Florry" is "Florrie" and "Nelly" is "Willie" (son)!!!!

Arthur Smith head M 26 cab proprietor
Annie wife 23
