Elizabeth Hardy
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 08:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with the following?
I have an Elizabeth Hardy baptised August 10th 1817 at Washington, Durham, daughter of Edward Hardy and his wife Anne Pearson.
Elizabeth had two illegitimate children - Margaret Hardy born around 1840 at Washington, and Mary Ann Hardy born 1847/1848 at Usworth.
On the 1841 census Elizabeth is living with her parents and Margaret at Usworth and the same in 1851 at 127 Wagon Mans Row.
By 1861 her daughter Margaret had married (at the young age of 16).
Cannot find out what happened to Elizabeth after 1851, or what happened to younger daughter Mary Ann Hardy. Have checked census and BMD with little results.
Any help much appreciated! :)

Hi!
Yes I can remember trying different variations of the surname with little result I am afraid! Will have another look though just to be sure.
Thanks, Andrew :)

The other possibility is that Elizabeth married and changed Mary Ann's surname to her married name, I have tried looking for both on 1861 cen and then cross ref surnames with those on marriages, there is several so maybe you would like to follow up on this possibility too.

Hi!
Thanks for the suggestion. I have had a quick look but cant find anything as yet (unless I am looking in the wrong place!). Will keep on searching. Thanks again, Andrew :)

Usworth comes under Chester le Street reg district at that time. But she could have moved and married anywhere, tis a case of searching, also remember if her husband completed the 1861 cen he may not have known the correct area she or Mary Ann were born.
If you find some possibilities, go back to the 1851 cen and see if you can trace the same couple/family on that one as you know for certain she was with her parents on 1851 and unmarried.
There is also the possibility that she did remarry but went overseas before 1861 cen.

Keep thinking outside the box and she may just pop-up.
