Ahh someone has added a postem (little envelope) on entry which says;
05/08/2008 .Full age, carpenter, son of Thomas. Marr Msry Reynolds. See Practical Family History No 128, July 2008

So Family Trees that have him as the Son of William STARLING/Alice FINCH are likely wrong

I was intrigued by these names on a Family Tree as Children of THOMAS/MARY;
John "Newton" Scottow Starling 1849
Thomas Scottow Starling 1853

This got me thinking and I searched on F/S for a Thomas, no surname, born c 1813-1815 Hanworth and this is what popped up;

Thomas SCOTTOW  Christened 20 June 1813, Hanworth, Norwich, Norfolk
Mother ANN Scottow

Fianally tracked down other posting you referred to which seems to confirm what I have found;

Hannah had an illigitimate child (Anna Maria Starling later called herself Emma Maria in 1861 in Kelling). I think Hannah then went on to marry John Keeler of Corpusty however it is confusing as she is named as Hannah Scottow rather than Starling on the wedding certificate. Her sister Maria (who married Isaac Jeary) also gives her name as Maria Scottow on her wedding certificate and names her father as Thomas Starling Scottow. However in all the cenus records I have they are all named Starling with no reference to scottow. Is anyone able to help with working out why the daughters called themselves scottow on their wedding certificates??

I would still get the M/C of 1838 as Witnesses may be a help in tracing this further back.
Plus his Fathers occp will be shown.

This is fascinating.  I'm trying to get my head around it.  Could it be that Ann Scottow married a Starling after 1813, so that Thomas Scottow took this name?
