Rebecca? & John Gowing
« on: Saturday 16 November 13 10:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello, could someone be so kind as to take a look for a marriage between a Rebecca (I dont know her maiden name) and a John Gowing around the 1828-34 in Shotesham Norfolk.  Rebecca was born 1811-19 in Barrow Upton? Norfolk and John around 1812 (I would guess in Shotesham) as his son Samuel's marriage cert states that John Gowing was a Farmer.  Thank you

Do you have birth cert of any child Rebecca had later with John Witham ?? That would give her maiden name

It seems the parents were not married when Samuel Gowing was baptised in 1833

Hello again,

This is an image of the actual parish register entry for Samuel's baptism -

If I'm right, Rebecca later married John Withall in London in1835, and I see she indicates she is a widow, which perhaps isn't true.

Think they then moved to Surrey by the time of the 1841 census, where Samuel Gowing, her son,  is living with them.

Checking the 1851 census, I'm pretty sure the birthplace for Rebecca is Burgh Apton.
I should imagine a Norfolk accent could pronounce it "Burr Upton"

Just to  add   the marriage     was  on 28 Dec 1835  at St Pancras  Parish Chapel ( LMA records  on  Ancestry )  , just a  pity   that no  Fathers  names  were  recorded  at that time , !

Thank you all so much for the quick replies....Yorkslass...you said that you had checked the 1851 census for Rebecca .....Can you give me some more info on this?....as this is the 1 census that I cannot find them on....perhaps Withall is misspelt?.  Very interesting re the baptism comments that they were not married....this enables me to think that perhaps John Gowing never died like she said and infact had a full life, I have never been able to find his birth/death or marriage to anyone else....but thereagain....I have had to guess his birthyear and place of birth as I dont have anymore info?....Thanks again for supplying the link for me to view...I have since downloaded it and placed on the tree which will really help me progress. Any help is greatly appreciated as I keep coming up to a brick wall.

The reference for the 1851 census is HO107/1593 folio 127 page 3.
Can't give a link, as this is on Findmypast, but it will be the same ref. on Ancestry.

Rebecca is living with her husband John Whittall, son Henry aged 9, and two lodgers named Brown.
Again, she says her birthplace is "Burrow Upton, Norfolk".

There's no such place in Norfolk - as I said, I believe it is Bergh Apton, which is only 4 miles from Shotesham.

I think I may have found John Gowing's burial entry.
It is at Saxlingham - though it does say John was from Shotesham, and he was 49 years old.

I guess Rebecca and John planned to marry, but sadly he died only 7 months after Samuel was born, and she was just "saving face" saying she was a widow.

And here is Rebecca's baptism - in Burgh Apton, 1810.

They've spelled it Rebekah,
daughter of Thomas Sherwood and Sarah his wife (late Chapman)
