Do you know his parents' names? the usual procedure is to research step by step through the family tree to see if you can find a connection.

The best thing to do might be to start with his obituary- Nova Scotia ones can be quite information and often mention names of parents, etc. His death certificate should alos give those details.

If you click on 'report to moderator' you can ask for this topic to be moved to CANADA board.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat

Wonder if this is related to your question ? Seems to have the Howe and Jeremy surnames ?

Ruby Williams was the daughter of John and Madeleine Thomas Williams. Joseph Howe was apparently the son of John Jeremy, a Mi'kmaq befriended by Indian Agent Joseph Howe, who then named his son after Howe. Later the son dropped the surname Jeremy, and just went by Howe.

Presuming that Ruby may have married Joseph Howe   ???  BUT maybe not  ???

Working from the above - John Williams and his wife Madeleine Thomas - parent of Ruby Williams.

John Williams was a famous guide -  in his latter years he received a pension from one of his favourite clients, Lord Dunraven.  He and his second wife, Madeleine, daughter of Louis Thomas and Mary Morris Thomas, had 12 or 14 children, all of whom died before reaching adulthood, except for their daughter Ruby.

This might be a possible for Madeline/Adelaide (widowed) and daughter Ruby Williams in Shubenacadie Nova Scotia 1900.

Adelaide Williams  56 Born 31 August 1844. Nova Scotia. Widowed.
Ruby Williams  14 Born 5 July 1886. Nova Scotia. Single. Indian Worker.
John Thomas  10 Boarder.
Frank Thomas  7 Boarder.
Sarah Goorley  12 Ad Daughter. Indian Worker.
Peter Glode  30 Grandson. Labourer.

The previous census 1890 Shubenacadie shows Ruby's father John Williams. So John Williams died between 1890 - 1900.

John Williams  75 Born 1816 Nova Scotia.
Adlade Williams  46 Born 1845 Nova Scotia.
Rebecca Williams  4
Jashia Thomas  27 Lodger
Rosey Thomas  20 Lodger
Michal Thomas  3
Ann Thomas  2
William Thomas  7 months
Loues Thomas  57

Michael Paul, 18, b. Cambridge Station, Kings Co., residing Shubenacadie
parents, Joseph Paul and Sarah A.
Rebecca William, 28, b. Shubenacadie, residing Shubenacadie
parents, John W. and Adelaide

death
Dec 15, 1929
Ruby Paul
Shubenacadie, West Hants, Indian Reserve
b. July 5, 1886
racial origin - Micmac
occupation - basket maker
father - John Williams, b. Yarmouth
mother - Adelaide Thomas, b. Dartmouth
informant Simon Basque - no relation
Surnames Jeremy, Paul, Toney, Smith, Pineo, Francis, Glode are all names that can be associated with Indian/Aboriginal origin.  It is entirely possible that Joseph Howe Jeremy was of mixed race and decided to drop the surname Jeremy. It is also possible that he may have married into the Howe family at some point but a lot of the bmd records don't exist so you would have to check for census info.
