Record Office visit?
« on: Wednesday 20 November 13 21:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Is anybody going to Norfolk Record Office any time soon, and would be able to take a photograph of a map or two there for me please?
James Wright was a mapmaker in the early 1800s - he made dozens of the tithe maps then.
I'd really like to get a picture of the one of Happisburgh done in 1840.
The RO ref is DN/TA 417.
Also one of Aylesham 1839. RO ref DN/TA 303 if possible.

Many thanks indeed  :)

Hi goldie61

have you seen the Thithe Maps on this site
http://historic-maps.norfolk.gov.uk/

Unfortunately Happisburgh and Aylesham are not included but there are some done by James Wright.

Not sure if you are aware but the Norfolk Record Office charges £10.50 for a Photography Permit

Hi Yokel
Thanks for the link to the maps.
Have yet to discover how to find out which ones James wright did!
What a pity there isn't one of Happisburgh or Aylesham.

10 pounds 50 is a bit steep for the photography permit - I know when I was in England a while back, I went to a few Record Offices (unfortunately not Norfolk at that time), and they were 5 pounds.
I guess it would be best to 'piggy-back' on somebody who is going there to take photos anyway if they would be happy doing that.

Cheers
Goldie

Hi Goldie, I can't help with the maps, but when I googled James Wright cartographer, it threw up this site, www.myfamilymatters.org.uk/page111   I don't know if you have seen it, or if it is your work,if not there is contact available, Dave

Hello Goldie,
I live just near Happisburgh, (did you know it is pronounced Hazeboro) however I cant get to the Record Office nowadays.  But maybe some present day snaps or something.  Let me know if you need any.

Hi Goldie

If you go to the NROCAT web site  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0x1o/
and search for James Wright, it will give you a list of the maps he produced.

Thanks everybody

The Yokel - Thanks. I had seen the NOrfolk Record Office site with all the references to James Wright's maps - he certainly was a busy man!
Finally got into the norfolk maps site - aren't they great?
As you say, unforntunately not one of Happisburgh or Aylsham. But lovely to see what he did.

Xinia - thanks for the offer of photos. What a kind offer. I'll see if I need any of particular places. I don't know the area at all.

Dave - I had seen the website about the Wright family thanks, but if I hadn't it waould have been quite a find - in fact the creator and I had been in quite a lot of communication - as you do! - HIS JAmes Wright was uncle to my James Wright!
He has obviously done a lot of research on his family tree.

Cheers everybody  8)
