Name query- baptism in Northop 1773.
« on: Friday 22 November 13 15:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters,

I shall be grateful for opinions on a christian name for a child baptised in Northop, St Eurgain on 12 December 1773. It reads, "Flintwood. Shane of Thomas and Mary Bond".

I cannot believe that Shane was a christian name at that time and in that area of North Wales particularly. There is no sex given for the child which doesn't help. I wondered if it should have been Sian, or Sion. Has an English vicar misunderstood a Welsh name? What do others think?

Jo.

Looking at Family Search there appear to be other Shane's bapt in Wales in the late 1700's and 1800's.

There was a Shane Price baptised earlier in the year in same village.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KCT9-3BM but as many people couldn't write I suppose it was all on the way they pronounced it!

Hello Kay99,

Thank you for this information. I hadn't thought of Family Search for this.

I will give this more thought but am still inclined to think that it was misunderstood for Sian, or Sion.

Jo.

Thanks, Wilcoxon, I have seen it on this myself. It has been transcribed as Shane and the way it is written in the parish records appears to show this too.

I still find it difficult to accept that a child would have been given this christian name in Northop area in 1773.

Jo.
