Marion Baillie - Gifford Records

Hello

Im looking for information on Marion Baillie who was born in Gifford, Haddingtonshire.

I know she was born in 1819 and married William Paxton.

Could anyone help? or know where i can find Gifford parish records?

The village of Gifford is in the parish of Yester, so it's Yester OPRs you need to look up.

Old Parish Records (OPR's) pre 1855 are on Scotlands People.  SP is a pay per view website so if you find an entry on the free index - you would have to buy credits to view/download it

She was still alive in 1861 and birthplace shown as Yester.  Downloading a copy of her death cert from SP will give you her parents names and mothers maiden name

East Lothian is particularly good on the Free Reg site, the 2 children of the marriage are on the site, did not find the marriage though.

I know what you mean, you have got to become shrewd with your searches and results. I think there is a link into best practice on SP, I will look for it and post it here. SP is a great archive, it is reasonably affordable, but can run away with the pennies if not careful.

1851 and 1861 censuses show her as Mary but eldest child in 1851 was George and this is his baptismal record from FS and shows her as Marion

Both William & Marion were b Haddington but there is no marriage showing in East Lothian between a Paxton & Baillie

I had a look at the coverage of the marriage records for Yester, 1820-1855, and FreeReg says they are missing. So it looks like we will not get the marriage of William Paxton and Marion Baillie.

Thanks - that explains it.  I thought it was odd that nothing came up even using the wildcard search
