Mohammed Alam, 153rd Rifles Punjabi Regiment: 878
« on: Thursday 28 November 13 16:03 GMT (UK) »
This gentleman was the great grandfather of a friend of a friend. I'm sorry I have no dates at present, but I have this extract from an email:

"In respect of my search for details and documents in respect of my great grand father I really appreciate the help. In order to assist, what I can say is that he served in the British army during the days of the Raj.  I do not have the specific dates when he enlisted or retired. However,  I am aware that he was enlisted with the 153rd Rifles Punjabi and that his regimental number was 878. I am further aware that he held the ranks of Havaldar and subsequently Subadar. He was given various medals, one of which was for bravery and he was then made Subadar Bahadur.

The award for bravery as I understand it, was for service at the Basra front. Furthermore, at the time of his retirement I believe his rank was Subadar Major. After retiring from the army he was involved in assisting widows of soldiers, as well as those who where war veterans and others when retired from the army with their pension claims. He may have simultaneously been given another civilian post(s).

The above details in relation to his regiment number of 878 and being a member of the 153rd Rifles Punjabi, were taken from a scroll I have seen which is written in both English and Urdu conferred upon him the title of Bahadur for bravery at Basra."

Any ideas on where to find further details? He is not any Mohammed/Muhammed Alam found by Googling, nor are there any relevant records on A***y or FindMyPast (there are migrations and deaths that may be him).

MODs please don't banish this to "Other Countries", at least not just yet. Might he be in some British Army records somewhere?

For the time being the best timescale I have is "early part of the C20th". "British assault on Basra" searches nearly all refer to recent events, but it seems we were at it in 1914 and 1941  as well.

This post really belongs on the ARMED FORCES board- the experts there will be more likely to be able to find information or suggest where you or your friend can search next.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Fair enough if nobody's responded here after a day or two.

Thanks. I got my hopes up a lot when I learnt about this site, but nothing for Mohammed Alam. It turns out that they specialise in families of European and Anglo-Indian origin only - the non-exact searches I tried certainly confirm this. Perhaps data on non-Europeans is harder to find, or in languages they don't understand. I'll request a move to the Military boards.

As well as FIBIS there's also the India Office Family Search (http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/) but that appears to concentrate on British and Europeans as well.

Thanks. But there seems to be a problem at this site at the moment - search not working

Search now working, but still nothing for Mohammed Alam. However there's an enquiry service I'll try.
