Thank you for your interest.
I have the 1871 census for Southport showing James his wife Eliza son Charles 4 born Cardiff and daughter Winifred Maud 2 born Weston. the next child Bertie was born 1873 Everton.
The census describes James as an author of school books. His marriage certificate states he was a school teacher.   I am inclined to doubt the family story that he was a Methodist Minister. The marriage certificate also states the father Charles was an Independant Minister.
James and Eliza had 13 children 12 boys and 1 girl. 10 of the boys died in Everton during a diptheria epidemic I have no names.
What I need is the birth of James. I did find  a James Lloyd Davies born Abergavenny 1840 but he was the wrong one. Any advice would be appreciated. Joan

Could his father be Charles McCordy Davies("Google" for details). If so,James could be born Stroud 3rd quarter 1840 Vol 11 Page 394,registered just as James Davies.

Regards
Roger

I notice that James is given as born Gloucestershire in the 1871 census. This could be him,the only time he appears with Charles, who is given as a school master at this point, but a minister in 1851

1841  HO 107  362  68  15  Rodborough,Stroud
1851  HO 107  1727  41  17  Wheatley Oxfordshire

and Charles final census appearance

1881  RG11  3642  106   57  Toxteth Park

The Reverend Charles McCordy Davies died 15 March 1885 at Beresford Road, Toxteth.  He left a will with £248.  The executor of the will was the Reverend Mark Simon Liverpool Congregational minister.

There is a Bertie Lloyd Davies with a father James marrying a Lucy Ada Mann in Dec 1904 at Brixton St.Saviour.  The father James is shown as deceased - no occupation.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NKC1-Q54

Now this Bertie Lloyd eventually is made a US citizen in 1914 but this done in London based on naturalisation papers prepared in Cook County, Illinois on 8th October 1900.  However he travels back and fore the US a number of times and his first 3 children (Vernon 1908, Muriel 1909, Winifred 1912) were all born in the UK.

He is on the 1920 to 1940 US census in Rockland, New York.  And on the 1930 census he gives his year of  arrival as 1887 (when he would have been 13 so assume he would have travelled with parents?).   I have searched but have not yet found any passenger lists with his name on.

Whilst on the census and other documentation his age varies the location of born Liverpool remains the same.  This looks very much like your Bertie.

Looks like Bertie had an earlier marriage (1896) in Cook County Illinois to a Ida Zella Woodward:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N7WH-94Q   Unfortunately the fathers name not given.

However there was a child Zella Lillian Davies born 1896 where Bertie age given as 22 and birthplace Liverpool.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NQTG-M3L

Bertie is not with Ida and Zella on the 1901 US census.

There is a Bertie L Davies giving his age as 16 aboard The City Of Berlin in 1891 from Liverpool to New York.

Returning to James Davies, this could be him in 1861,despiter the given birth place

RG09  1773  7  3 -  Lodger at Royal Parade,Bisley,Stroud registration district.
(A National Schoolmaster,as per his father's initial occupation, and that given for him on his marriage certificate)
