Cross referenced with 1939 register of electors Mary Foster at 50 Charlemont st.
Also a Mary Foster at Sullivan St so that eliminates the Mary i'm looking for.

I could be wrong but I would aay it could be a simple case of John Godsill dying leaving his widow with a lot of young children. She probably tried to manage for a few years until she met her second husband whom may not have wished to rear the children and hence them being sent to institutions. Ee John Gidsill Jr ..... there is a JG aged 11 in Townparks in Galway which is another institution, given that he was in Letterfrack Galway at one point this MAY be a possibiluty for him.

The girls appeared to have made lives for themselves in England so I'm hoping there were good outcomes to their lives after the institutions.

Have you tried following up on children Mary had with her second husband ?

Freeman's Journal, 23 Sept.1898:
Bandmaster desires engagement with brass, reed, or string band; house required for self and family. Address Mr. Godsil, bandmaster, Ormonde road, Kilkenny. [also 21 Sept.1898]
next notice-
Bandmaster; wanted immediately, Bandmaster for a Brass Band; must be good cornet player; a young man preferred. Address Jno Magennis, hon sec, St John's Brass Band, Kilkenny.

Wonder if politics was behind John wanting to leave Athenry in 1881?
"On the 7th of Febraury 1880 in the Galway Vindicator  newspaper, it was reported that  a public meeting was held in Athenry on Sunday for the purpose of establishing a local branch of the National Land League.
   There was a large attendance. A substantial platform was erected in the chapel yard  and the Athenry Brass Band at the beginning and termination of these orderly proceedings discoursed in the practiced style some likely, soul stirring airs."

You little daisy Hasta thats brill ,you would'nt believe it but i tried his name for the Kildare Observer last week and nothing came up for him,i just cant understand that i tried under four different spellings,must have done something wrong.

Hasta i searched under Godsil on its own and got another hit for 2nd June 1900 where there was a bit of competition between two brassbands both trained by John Godsil.
