John Godsil ,Bandmaster.
« on: Saturday 30 November 13 14:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I am researching this family who have set me a few problems re marriage and deaths.
John Godsil married Mary Conway?born Limerick where?possibly 1880s marriage
John was described as a Bandmaster on one of his childrens birth certs,Military connection?

1901 Census of 7 Whelans Row[Monasterevan,Kildare
Mary Godsil age 35 born Limerick a widow.
Children
Mary Kate born 1887 Kilkenny
Elizabeth born main st Youghal 1889
Josephine born Cork 1891
Amelia born Youghal 1892
Adeline born Clifden reg dis Galway 1895
William born Thurles Tipperary 1897
Beatrice born Kilkenny 1899
Teresa born Athy 1901 died Dublin South 1902?
John Michael born?appears on Letterfrack school register 1894 son of Bandmaster no other details

The daughter Elizabeth married,Irish Genealogy 1911 says Elizabeth Godrie,Timothy McDonnell and its from this marriage that i could verify the parents but not down as deceased Curragh Kildare.
Between 1901 and 1911 the family must have been in dire circumstances as when i searched 1911 census i found
Adeline at Sisters of Charity Industrial school Friarshill,Roscommon,
Wm Godsil at Sisters of charity Brunswick st .Dublin.
Amelia at Iona Drive Glasnevin a nurse
Elizabeth wrongly transcribed as Godail 72 Charlemont St.
No sign of the other siblings or deaths, their father John must have died 1900 as Teresa born 1901
and no sign of the mother
A further search of marriages revealed a marriage in St Patricks Church,Morristown Butler,Kildare June 23 1909
of a Mary Godsil nee Cooney?a widow to John Foster widower a gardener giving her fathers name as Daniel Cooney.

I have no doubt its the same person but why Cooney not Conway as on birth and marriage of Elizabeth.
1911 census of  no 11 Ballysaxhills,Ballysax East,Kildare Shows
John Foster 55 a gardener born Queens
Mary Foster born Limerick
John Foster age 1 born Dublin.

Any advice on how to research the father John if military or the missing siblings would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Dathai.

Sadly, it looks like a possibility that Amelia was killed as a civilian in London during WW2 (this may corroborate the Mary Godsil to Foster marriage):

The sense I'm getting is that the family may have faced a catastrophic challenge after John's death just prior to the 1901 census record, is this a possibility for Teresa?

Thank you to Luimneach and Gaffy for P Ms a ,a lot of food for thought there.
Gaffy your a Jewel many thanks you've discovered some great findings that i would never have uncovered, yes that marriage in Leitrim is a bit of a head wrecker maybe she died and he later took up with Mary Conway/Cooney,probably never get to the bottom of it,any way thanks for all your sterling work.
Tara thank you too,i dont know how i missed Beatrice as i searched under Godsil,Godsel,Godsill and Godsell think i spend too much time on here and the brain is going off to la la land.
Seems that Beatrice was at St Vincents Convent or the North Dublin Union Auxiliary in Cabragh run by the sisters of charity under sister Margaret Galvin.
Thank you all really appreciated.
