Thanks Kay and Weste most of mine married at Saint Matthews, it's been like a jigsaw puzzle but all the pieces are coming together now, I live in Tasmania so can only find things on the internet.

Keep an eye on www.freereg.co.uk as there are lots of Walsall records on there, I know st matts is one of the ones being done. It's updated once a month. I have a cd with some Walsall st matts baptisms and burials on which has a lot of stuff on.

Thanks Weste, that's where I have been looking, where did you get the cd from ? All my Thackers and Onions family were christened at Saint Matthews and the Walsall family history centre have been very helpful to me too, being so far away makes it hard, still without computers I wouldn't have found anything as my mum wasn't interested it was only me remembering that grandad came from Walsall that got me started.  Chris

It seems Joseph Bates who married Elizabeth (Liza) Onions who was my grandfathers sister had a son named Norman A Bates who married my Auntie Ivy (mums sister) so they were cousins !

Thanks so much Carole I never thought to look on the 1911 census I was looking at the 1939 register and on the Free BMD there was only Ernest J b 1912 that I found. I see on 1911 there were three younger children.
