Children found so far:
Thomas Brown Baptised    1783   Crawley
William Brown     Baptised 1786  Crawley, Hants
Benjamin Brown     "         1789      "         "
James Brown          "         1792      "          "
Elizabeth Brown       "        1795  Hampshire
Martha Brown          "         1798  ?

this would make the the Phinias Brown in Westhoughton at least 41 at the birth of Thomas Brown and 56 at the birth of Martha Brown ....
I think we have TWO Phineas Brown ....
1 in Lancashire
1 in Hampshire ......I think this needs more research into the Hampshire Phineas Brown and family .Unfortunately , I only have knowledge of Lancashire records that early ...you need a Hampshire specialist ...
You say your Phineas Brown died of Smallpox in 1808 - do you have his age when he died ??...was he 66 ??.......if he was nowhere near that age - that would confirm we have the wrong Phineas in Lancashire ..
good luck .. ;)

Thank you everybody for your replies.

Garstonite:

His age was listed as 51? in the Parish records. Which, I assume, means that they weren't sure.
It may mean that we have been chasing two Phineas Browns.

Thanks for your help.

Paul

Hi Ladyhawk,

The second marriage listed is the one I'm after. I have previously  found this record and believe that it is my 5 x Great Grandfather and mother. This is where my tree stops as I can't find a birth or baptism record for him and so have no idea of his parents names etc.

Thank you for replying.

Hi

I can confirm Phineas Brown  married Susannah Cannings Bighton  Hants  29 October 1779
Phineas died of smallpox and was buried St Mary's Crawley 16 July 1808 aged 51.  Therefore, I believe he was born abt 1757, but I haven't managed to find a birth for him yet.  I have found a Phineas James Brown buried in Sneed Wiltshire  1781  aged 54 husband of Lydia - but that is quite a step from Crawley.  Another possible is Phineas Brown buried 16 Feb 1748 All Saints Whiteparish Wilts, but I do no know the age at death.  He might be the same Phineas Browne who married Ann Elliot  26 Dec 1701  Whiteparish.

Susannah appears on the 1841 Census living in Crawley  as Susan Brown aged 90.  As she is living with one Sally Sandom  aged 79, I assume she was living in almshouses.  It could be that Sally was family as there is a marriage between Elizabeth Brown and William Sandom 9 Nov 1816 St Mary's Crawley - likely to be Betty Brown.  Sally may be William's mother  - a Joseph Sandom  married a Sarah Inward St Mary's Crawley 20 Jan 1782.  Susannah/Susan Brown was buried in St Mary's  Crawley Sept 13 1843.
Their children were:
1. Thomas   bap April 30 1782  buried 16 Nov 1866  both St Mary's Crawley  Married Hannah HALL Feb 3 1806  St Mary's Crawley.
2.William  b 1786
3.Benjamin b 1789
4. James  b 1792
5. Betty  b 1795  married Wm Sandom 1816 at least 4 children
6. Martha b 1798

My connection with the Brown Family is through Rhoda Brown, grt grand daughter of Phineas and Susannah thru eldest son Thomas.  Rhoda b Crawley 1848 who married William PIPER of Sparsholt in St Mary's Crawley in 1868.

I have read that some Hampshire and Wiltshire Cannings came from Protestant Ireland in the 17th century, but I haven't managed to establish whether Susannah is connected to this line. I would be interested in know more about the Bastardy Order.

Hi gene-genie,

Thank you very much for your reply. It's given me some information that I didn't have regarding others from the family. If you are interested, the Brown tree from my research  is available on ancestry.com under the paulmartin340 tree.

The Summons and Bastardy examination is attached. The originals are available from the Hampshire Records office.

Happy Christmas

The files are too large to attach to this. I can email direct to you if send me your email.
