STIRLING Alexander and WILSON Ann
« on: Thursday 12 December 13 11:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
Euphemia Stirling my GG grandmother was born in 1849 at Balinshoe to an Ann Wilson and an Alexander Stirling. (Kirriemuir must have been trying to save paper the entries are so brief and so many squashed onto one page! ) On Euphemia's death cert same parents - all looks straight forward.
I have Ann Wilson and Alexander Stirling married in 1849 in Kirrie about four weeks before the birth of Euphemia. Just their names and 7/6 at the end of the line - I take it they were both from the parish and you got charged 10/6 if one of you lived outside the parish. Ann Wilson lived till 1895 -death cert reads widow of Alexander Stirling ploughman. Here's the problem...
I can't find them on the 51 census.  On the 61 Census I have Ann Wilson, widow, linen weaver and Euphemia Stirling now age 11 living in Kirriemuir. In 1868 Euphemia marries - cert states father Alexander Stirling, Stone Quarrier, deceased. I've got an Alexander Stirling stone quarrier but he has another family??
What happened to Alexander and which Alexander was it that Ann Wilson married?
I'd love to put this one to bed..
Thanks
Jen

Kay that's brill! That's them - correct ages, occupation, place. So it looks like he died before 1851. I'm just going to check back on my old searches for him at SP...fresh eyes.
Many thanks

OK I've check the OPR for deaths exit for Kirriemuir during 1849 and 1854 and according to SP they do. Checked for any Stirlings dying in Angus between 1849 and 54 - only two showing one I've looked at is a wee boy the other happened too early in 1849 to be him. So Alexander Stirling still missing....

Oops that last post should have read - checked that records exist not exit! Well this chap's leading me a merry dance. From the documents I have my Alexander is described as a quarrier or a ploughman - he's living at Balinshoe when he marries Ann Wilson in 1849.  OK there are two Stirlings on the 41 census down as free stone makers living around Forfar.  One called Alexander and one called William - they both had boys called Alexander born 1812 and 13.  As I now have DCs for both I now know they were brothers born to James Stirling and Margaret White.
It looks like the son born to Alexander married an Ann Doig and died in 1840 (this last bit from a family chart on LDS - normally I never look at these). This leaves the one born to William as the most likely candidate for my Alexander - no trace of him unless of course he's the one that marries Ann Willson and dies before 1851.  Any thoughts - places to go with this?

Ahhh, now know that James Stirling and his wife Margaret White (Whyte) had three sons and each of them had a son called Alexander!
Alexander -Alex his  son born 1812 marries Ann Doig in 1832 dead in 1840 (I think I've got Ann back with her parents on the 41 census)
William -Alex his  son born 1813 - then nothing...
James -Alex his  son born 1808 - then nothing...
There seems to have been a lot of work done on these Stirlings at LDS..however no clues as to what happened to the two missing Alexanders - hopefully one of which married Ann Wilson. I wonder if someone more experienced than me could have a look:

is this one of those cases where you just have to accept he could have been one of two people and I'll never really know?
Thanks

Have you had a look at the Stirling/Skirling surname pages on this site? - might be helpful.

Breaky thanks for that.  I've had a look at the site and all the Alexander Stirlings on the huge list.  Once you drop out those not from around Kirrie I'm back to the same family groups.  That's good I think :-\
I really don't see how I'm going to pinpoint 'my' Alexander's parents  but I'm pretty confident I know who his grandparents are. Think I'm going to put this side of the family to bed - they can come out again next winter!
Thanks everyone

I don't think we have the same family, but my gg-grandma was Janet Stirling (Sterling) from Letham (Dunnichen) Forfarshire.
You will find her and her family at my website http://www.genesontheweb.co.uk/p22.htm
And all the family here http://www.genesontheweb.co.uk/ui57.htm#a0

Hope this helps.  :)  :)
