Goouds of Ketton
« on: Thursday 12 December 13 19:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I hope someone can help.  My 3xGreat Grandfather was John Gooud, a Gardener, born abt 1807 in Ketton.  I can follow him once censuses commence in 1841 but can't get anything before that.  Also I would love to know who his parents were.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Given the unusual spelling of this surname - could this baptismal entry be a possibility.  High levels of illiteracy could mean it was "spelt as it sounded"

Hi Carole,  many thanks for a quick reply.  You could be on to something as, in his life-time, his surname was written as Good, Goode, Goond, and Gould!  Could be something to do with his having a 'country' accent and the Enumerator being a Londoner.

John moved to Feltham where he met Eliza Juett (another name to conjure with).  They were married in St George's Hanover Square, London.  By this time John was living in Marylebone.

His children seem to have gone by the Goode version of the name.  However, John was married and died as Gooud.  I have followed the trees of a Thomas Gooud also born in Ketton, a Samuel Gooud whose family emigrated to Australia and a James Goud of Empingham.  All in the hopes of gaining some more clues.

I can't get to Ketton so am very appreciative for any help in furthering this branch of my Tree.

Have a look at these entries all born to John & Elizabeth in Ketton - Jemima & Alice are spelt Gooud

Unless there were 2 families with the same parents names - these are possibilities for siblings

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NY23-CQS - probably the earlier Thomas died
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J3S1-MFG - probably the earlier John died
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JQPB-4XP - probably the earlier Alice died

 ;)Carole,

Thanks for that.  I have a problem with these people as I am aware of a Tree in existance that lumps them together as siblings, however, the tree moderator doesn't seem to have checked on any source except Family search and on Ancestry the John Gooud married to Mary Clarke is the son of James Goud & Elizabeth Bloodworth.  I have researched this short tree out of interest and it ends with John & Mary (a servant on the farm since 15years of age), Richard his brother and their brother Valentine Michael.  These left no descendants and were what I call my Empington Goouds.

I think that there is a strong possibility that your John Goode son of John & Elizabeth and Thomas Goode born/Baptised 2 Aug 1801 could be brothers as they are both also based in Ketton cum Tixover.  I would love to check the actual record as sometimes the Transcribers make a mistake.

Wow!!!  That is so good.  Thank you so much for that information.  Do you think, in your experience, that the Goouds and Goodes and Gooudes are all the same family?  I realize that they are all born to John & Elizabeth but could there have been more than one family with those names?  I have searched for so long now that it is hard to take in that I can push my family back another generation. :D  Also it seems to verify my guess that Thomas born 1801 and John born 1806 would be brothers.

How does one get hold of the records that you have quoted?  Are they in the public domain or does one have to be an Archivist or something?

Again, many thanks for your help,  Ann-Marie

Just a quicky, I have now found, with your help, John Goude marriage to Elizabeth Popple on Pallots Marriage Index for 1791.

Thanks so much for that.  If your records go any further back I would love to know.  I will get round to adding all the children too.  Such a shame that they 'lost' so many.

As you can see I'm coming round to the idea that I now have details of my 4xGreat Grandparents.

Hi,
Yes it does look like they are all the same family, different vicars spelt names differently so it is a strong possibility.  I have had a look at PR again and there is a John Goode baptized in 1770 to George & Ann Goode at Ketton also the next entry is for an Elizabeth Popple 1770 parents Samuel & Elizabeth Popple. Here are the family details;
Marriage at Ketton
28 October 1753
George Goode of this parish
        &
Ann Hubard of this parish
~~~~~~~~~~
Baptisms at Ketton to George & Ann
5 October 1755 John Goode
28 Sept 1756 George Goode
4 Sept 1767 Elizabeth Goode
28 Feb 1767 Anne Goode
3 June 1770 John Goode.
Burials at Ketton
4 Feb 1774 Ann Goode daughter of George & Ann
17 Sept 1794 Anne Goode widow of George
23 Oct 1756 George son of George & Ann
19 June 1756 John son of George & Ann
20 May 1790 George Goode.
~~~~~~~~~~
Now the Popple side
Baptisms to Samuel & Elizabeth  Popple
30 Oct 1763 Samuel
3 Mar 1765 John
18 May 1766 William
30 Mar 1770 Thomas
8 July 1770 Elizabeth
20 Aug 1780 Jane
23 May 1784 Catherine

Hope these all help there are a lot of entries for the surnames Goode and Popple in Ketton so you should be able to get back quite a way.
