Margaret O'Mullan
« on: Sunday 15 December 13 21:39 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with a birth date or even year for Margaret O'Mullan, daughter of Jeremiah O'Mullan and Elizabeth O'Kane. According to her marriage cert she was 15 when she married in Dungiven Church in 1878. On the cert Margaret is called Mullin, her father Mullen and it's signed Maggie Mullan...even though they are actually O'Mullan !! The O'Mullans lived in Ashlamaduff.

According to the marriage cert Margaret was born in 1863. According to the 1901 census it was 1866 and according to the 1911 census it was 1863...so 1863 is probably right.

Family Search births and baptisms 1620/1881 is showing births for children of a similarly named couple,
Ellen O'Mullan 11 sep 1876 dtr of Jeremiah O'Mullan and Elizabeth O'Kane,Limavady,Derry.
Fathers birthplace Ashlamaduff.
it also shows a birth for George on the 16 Feb 1865,Garvagh,Londonderry.
Perhaps if you got Georges birth cert it would lead you to church files microfilm for the baptism.
Being a southern boy myself i dont know much about the lay of the Land in Londonderry.

It really makes it much easier if you post the links to the information found to save us searching for the same thing.

The birth is actually for Ellen Agatha O'Mullen and Ashlamaduff is not the birthplace of her father. The LDS usually put in the father's residence as his birthplace if the birth took place elsewhere (mother went back to her mother's home to have baby for example).

Thanks for your reply Daithí .
The only Margaret O'Mullan/Mullen/Mullin/Mullon I've been able to find registered in Garvagh was born in 1866 ... father Charles.
The O'Mullans were the only family of that name in the area which, you'd think, would make it easier but the "O" was always being dropped and there are lots of Mullans around Garvagh.
While Margaret was registered in Garvagh I don't know where she was baptised.

Have some Mullan birth certificates in my files so I'll have a look later and see if I've anything for these people.

It's possible Patrick was born before 1864 which is why you haven't found an extracted birth record for him. Have you tried contacting the church in Claudy for details about him- they might have birthdate somewhere in their records.

Ashlamaduff is in Newtownlimavady registration district but the Mullan certificates I have are mainly for Garbagh and Aghadowey so I haven't found anything helpful on the family yet.

I was just looking at the census when I got your message...here he is in the 1901 census:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Malin/Ballagh/1184968/

Also Patrick O'Mullan, age 43, clergyman, is listed on the S.S. Carmania,  that departed from Queenstown and arrived in New York on 22 Apr 1909. His nearest relative is listed as Mrs. O’Mullan, Garvagh, Co. Derry.

So the 1st would give us 1868 and the 2nd 1866 !

Wonder if Patrick was baptised under another Christian name and took Patrick upon ordination? Did he stay in U.S. after 1909 or return to Ireland?
