Rescued: Mutt & Jeff for 2373 S. SJT. F. Sutton A.O.C
« on: Saturday 21 December 13 18:15 GMT (UK) »
I picked these up from a market stall for just a few pounds. I would love to find a good home for them. They are in excellent condition and look like this lovely pair - although the ribbons aren't quite so pristine.

All my old subscriptions have lapsed and I still can't get my head around the TNA searches so I hand the baton over to you wonderful people.

Would all newcomers please remember the rules - no posting details of possibly living people. It is reasonable to assume his siblings and parents can be discussed but if anyone finds children or nephews/nieces please PM me or make direct contact and point them here.

We are looking for an F. Sutton - regimental number 2373 (I think - the stamping is not the best) - a Staff Serjeant in the Army Ordnance Corps
Caswell - Durham(Jarrow), Northumberland(Berwick), Dorset(Netherbury)
Drury - Middlesex(Kensington), Shropshire(Oswestry/Selattyn)
Turner - Dorset(Parkstone)
Speight - Essex(Braintree), Kent(Gravesend), Westmorland(Kendal)
Stockley - Dorset(Corfe Castle)
Amey - Suffolk(Haverhill)
Cousins - Norfolk(Ketteringham)
Sears - Bedfordshire(Potton), Cambridgeshire(Gamlingay)

For starters there is a Frederick Sutton AOC number A2373 in the medal index. So it look as though we are looking for a Frederick.

That must be him Mo - The engraving reads "A-2373" and I left off the "A" because I foolishly thought it irrelevant.  :-[

Do we know what the "A" means?

I suppose being a mere Staff Sergeant he will not appear in the Gazette - I have certainly drawn a blank there.

Are there any more details on his medal card that may help?

Forget the medal card - there's nothing on it of any use. No addresses - nothing. It seems he never left England as far as I can tell. There's certainly no indication of any action.

There's just name, corps, rank and the two medals.

I have looked at people who enlisted back and forwards of that number in the AOC and the nearest ones I can find enlisted at Woolwich - not much help I know.  There does not appear to be any surviving service record for him either.

I have posted a request at the Royal Logistics Corps archives site - perhaps they will have some idea. It appears the A.O.C became the R.A.O.C soon after WW1 and was later absorbed into the R.L.C.

http://www.rlcarchive.org/SrchRan.aspx

You have to register and buy credits before getting any actual results so I am hoping for some generosity from them.

He was an armourer..
.A prefix tells us that and served overseas in a war zone as he has a Victory Medal with War Medal.
Post 1916 deployment.

Thanks Ady - the "Theater of War served in" entry on his medal card is blank - does that tell us anything more?

Would a post-1916 deployment give is any hints about his age?

How can you tell he's an Armorer?

A prefix was for armourer. Blank date and no star signify post Jan 1916 deployment.

That's about it from card.
