« on: Sunday 22 December 13 00:06 GMT (UK) »
Although I find lots of references to Drumkerry I am unable to find its location on a map. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,  Stan

I can't see a Drumkerry (or anything that close) listed as a townland in Donaghmoyne parish or County Monaghan. Are you sure of the name?

It is listed in the Tithe Applotment but not on any maps, nor in the current list of Townlands.

Yes, see the problem. I did find a Drumkerry in 1901 census but it's in Cavan (Baileboro area).

Must have been a name change.

Someone else researching a family in Drumkerry, Donaghmoyne- haven't read all through the page yet but wonder if there are any clues there?

All of the Drumkerry references seem to originate from the tithe applotment books, so here's a theory.  I wonder if parts of the tithe applotment books were transcribed from other written notes?  If so, is it possible that the page which seems to clearly show Drumkerry (to my untrained eye at least) is a mistranscription of Drumharriff (which is recorded elsewhere in the books as Drumheriff)?

The reason I put this forward is two-fold:

1. There are other instances in the the books where the same place is transcribed in different ways, eg. in Donaghmoyne parish itself, Dromlosta and Drumlosta (ie. Drumlusty); and

2. When you compare Drumhariff and Drumharriff North in Griffiths Valuation with the tithe records for Drumherriff  (and yes, I accept that they are 2 decades apart), there are big family names missing in the tithe records, yet if you look at the tithe records for the so-called Drumkerry as well as the tithe records for Drumherriff, the names match up to a much greater degree with Drumhariff and Drumharriff North in Griffiths Valuation - I'm talking about folk like Courtney, Beegan, Caulfield, Sheridan, Markey.

As I said, only a theory.
