Jarratt Street - Methodist or Roman Catholic
« on: Friday 03 January 14 11:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone
Well after much reading can anyone confirm that what appears to be Non Conformist Records for Jarratt Street formerly North Street, Hull is NOT a Methodist Chapel but a Roman Catholic Chapel ??

I have found baptism's under  0828156 (RG4 3686) from 1820-34 and states HULL CHAPEL IN JARRETT STREET FORMERLY IN NORTH ST SCULCOATES LIC, SCULCOATES, YORK, ENGLAND the details given for this GS Film No: Births, baptisms and marriages, 1798-1840 Author: Catholic Church. Jarrett Street (Sculcoates, England)

Details on familysearch RG4-8:
http://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/England_and_Wales_Nonconformist_Index_for_RG_4-8_(Record_Groups_4-8)_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records)

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Hull/HullHistory/HullHistory9.html
THE ROMAN CATHOLICS... Hadley (who wrote in 1778) informs us that the Catholics afterwards worshipped "in a room on the north side of Holy Trinity church, ....
1790... 20th March, ...laid the foundation stones of a small chapel and house in North Street,
...1826 they purchased a piece of ground in Jarratt Street,

St. Charles' Church is in Jarratt Street ....

If the RC worshipped within Holy Trinity, did they marry there too as Catholics and if so did they marry as late as 1820 at Holy Trinity ??

AND

THE PRIMS
Primitive Methodism in Hull
.... In 1851 the Clowes Chapel in Jarratt Street, another Sissons design, was opened. It was a huge and expensive building, seating 1,400 and costing £7,410.

This Methodist Chapel above is far too late after the baptism's I have found, so from this I can deduce that Hull Chapel is Roman Catholic, although there was a Methodist Chapel at North St c1819 later West St.

And lastly, would Methodist records have been written in Latin, the reason I ask this is because some baptism's are written with Latin names, but the marriage of 1820 of the parents is written in English at Holy Trinity, Bishop's Transcripts ???

Definitely Roman Catholic Records :

RG4/3686 Register of Births and Baptisms of the Hull Catholic Chapel (formerly in North Street and now in Jarratt Street) of Hull, Yorkshire from 1798 to 1840, with a Register of Marriages for 1825, and a Register of Deaths from 1798 to 1822.

A page at the front of the Register says that the Chapel was founded by Revd Peter Francis Foucher, Vicar General of Aix en Provence, France, who first came to Hull in 1798 and found around 40 Catholics. He laid the foundation stone for the House and Chapel on 20th March 1799. On 26th July he blessed the Chapel and said first Mass. On 20th Sept 1799 M de Boisgelin, Archbishop of Aix en Provence said High Mass in the new Chapel. M Foucher left Hull 8th March 1820 to return to France. The baptisms by M Foucher are all recorded in English, after he leaves they change to being recorded in Latin.

Many thanks Alan, that sorts that out. By the way, you mention a text at front of the register, have you seen the actual register or is this info somewhere on the 'net ??

So now we this family started as RC, followed by prostitutes and imprisonment for having a brothel, imprisonments for both larcenry and coin counterfeiting, imprisonment for buggery, imprisonment for larcenry against a person, multi-cultural marriages and whatever else I haven't found as yet - these families were certainly lively  ::)

You can view the original images on Ancestry or thegenealogist. Just search for somebody early in the register then page back to about 6 pages from the front of the Register for details of M Fouchers donations.

Click on Search - Birth, Marriage & Death (Including Parish)

Click on "View All in Card Catalogue" near bottom right.

England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1970

RG4 : Register of Births Marriages and Deaths

Yorkshire

Catholic

Piece 3686 : Sculcoates, The Hull Catholic Chapel, formerly North Street (Catholic) 1798-1840

Thats long hand, or just search for a person using the normal search facility. Loads more Non Conformist Registers there, not just in Yorkshire.

Hi, I have my grandmothers certificate of baptism from the register of the Primitive Methodist Book of Baptism at Jarratt Street, Hull. This was in October, 1882. Hope this helps.
