Abel Wilkins Coal Hewer 1874-1920
« on: Friday 03 January 14 22:28 GMT (UK) »
My Great Grandfather was Abel Wilkins b: 25 Jun 1874 in Aberdare, South Wales. I know from the 1891 censes that as a boy he was a miner when aged 17, his main address as an adult aged 27 in 1901 through to  1911 he lived in Main St then Lower Viaduct Terrace Crumlin, South Wales, hence I am trying to locate which colliery or mines he would have possible worked in as Coal Hewer during this period from 1900-1920.

I would assume that he would have worked at one of the mines closest to home, so my educated guess is either Llanhilleth or Aberbeeg  colliery. But this may be completely wrong.

Does anyone have any knowledge about possible employment/payment records or the like that would show where Abel  was employed. Any information would be much appreciated.

This is a must read site for you:

http://www.welshcoalmines.co.uk/

Llanhilleth & Aberbeeg are very possible as are Celynen North (1913) & Celynen South and Oakdale.

I have been searching for a recent map listing all collieries but have not yet been able to locate it - will keep trying.

Many thanks for the reply I have looked at this website and it mainly list those miners who were either killed or injured down the mine. Abel died in Glamorgan Hosp Aug 1920, it would appear from the website he did not have any accidents, a lucky man.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the link to the Welsh Coal Mine site, I will join the forum there and ask the same question. I have just written to the Welsh Mining Museum to see if they can give me some leads as well.
